Rules of Civility, Amor Towles. Through Tinker, Kate and Eve are introduced to social circles they never would have had access to otherwise. Instead of being a rival for Tinker, in an odd way, she is an ally. It's probably literary blasphemy to say so, but I found Rules of Civility infinitely preferable. Her flirtatious nature and her knack for always knowing where the party is, attracts Katie who is slightly more down-to-earth and sensible. Summary: The year that changed the life of a young woman in New York, remembered when photographs trigger a flashback twenty-eight years later.
1938 proves to be a landmark year for her. Told from the vantage point of an older woman, looking back at the year when everything went wrong – and, sort of, right – in her life, this is the story of Katey Kontent, real name Katya, the daughter of a Russian immigrant determined to make her fortune in Manhattan. After Eve accidently dumps a bowl of food into Katie's lap, the two become fast friends. Katey's best friend Eve Ross – a Samantha among women – bows out of the narrative early on when Tinker crashes his car with the two of them in it. And a blurb from David "One Day" Nicholls ("a witty, charming dry-martini of a novel") is hardly going to hurt. If there's a problem, it's this: the parallels with Breakfast at Tiffany's are perhaps a little too overt (glamorous but down-at-heel girl falls in love with wealthy but mysterious benefactor). Rules of Civility is a beautifully written novel set in post-depression New York City. She is immediately transported back three decades to the night she first met him – on the eve of the most memorable year of her life. Yes, poor decisions are made, friends come and go but through the turmoil someone sees her potential. Kate adapts well to switching between the different social strata. Meanwhile, Katey's life canters forward through parties and unlikely introductions until she lands a truly Carrie Bradshaw-style role at a hot new magazine, Gotham.
For fans of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's, this a witty, elegant fairytale of New York, set in. I think this would make an excellent film. And the reader gets a front row seat as the author treats us to a glittery world of fabulous cars, expensive house parties and beautiful people. Eve, or Evey, is beautiful, vivacious and impossible to ignore. A beautifully written book that transports you to a different time and place. I loved too that the author's name makes him sound like something out of The Great Gatsby himself. At the end of 1937, Katey and her roommate Eve decide to do the town for New Years. It's a fast crowd but not without some memorable finds. Shiver my timbers, it's a real smasher, no fakes or frauds here. But that's not exactly a complaint. So often, we just live our lives. I finished the book in a day! They affect her and she also leaves her mark on them. Elgin Library Evening Reading Group read Rules of Civility and discussed it at their most recent meeting.
In both of Towles's works, we see characters who not only live their lives, but, through circumstances, are brought to reflect upon their course and what they've meant, inviting the reader to do the same. I loved the feel of the period created in this book. She made him in other ways, and unbeknownst to Katey, helps make her as well. He further broadens her horizons in the upper circles of New York society. Rating: Definitely not a Marmite book, We were unanimous in our enjoyment of this novel, with markdowns only because of the font/print which was dark grey (not easy to read in some lights) and lack of speech marks (although this bothered some more than others). But when the work day is over, it's Evey who takes Katie by the hand and the two find themselves living it up with drinks paid for by others. She possesses a naturally sophisticated mind and is outgoing and seemingly fearless.

Lots of lovely imagery and interesting things to think about regarding life and love. When Tinker Grey wanders into the bar looking for his brother, it alters the courses of all three of their lives. 'In a jazz bar on the last night of Kontent knew: how to sneak into a silk eighty words per the end of the year she'd learned how to live like a redhead and insist on the very best, that riches can turn to rags in the trip of a heartbeat, chance encounters can be fated, and the word 'yes' can be a poison. Eve is from the midwest with high hopes. It tells the story of Kate, a wise and well-read working girl, who suddenly finds herself maneuvering through the sparkling upper echelons of high society. Katie is a working class girl, trying to make a name for herself in the publishing world. Towles recreates New York of the past with great conviction, and it's a joy to follow Katey around Manhattan.
Amor Towles is a gifted storyteller and his prose is gorgeous. So for me, it was an interesting read that has me looking for more books from the same author. This story gave me a lot to think about. They have carefully rationed their nickels for the night's festivities, as neither of them makes much money in their jobs (Kate works in a typing pool). In commercial terms, it lives up to the hype. Sad, the way nostalgia can make you feel, wistful and longing for how it used to be. While you're lost in the whirl of silk stockings, furs and hip flasks, all you care about is what Katey Kontent does next.

Both Tinker and Katey rise from modest beginnings on their wits, yet come to different ends. The Library of the First President. I also cannot help but mention that parts of it reminded me of one of my favorite movies of all time, Breakfast at Tiffany's. We also felt that the period came across as being authentic (jazz age, post prohibition, pre WWII). She works as a secretary in a law firm, and while she is excellent at what she does, her real ambition is to work in publishing.
