Is Cursillo another organization? Cursillo is a "movement of the Catholic Church that, with its own method, makes it possible to live what is fundamental for being a Christian. " Since each person comes to the Cursillo from a different place in time and a different relationship with God, it is understandable that each will respond differently to the material presented and the experience of community living in a Christian atmosphere. The goal of the Cursillo movement is to make Christ the prime influence in one's life and in society. Out of their common efforts, something new in the life of the Catholic Church was born…the Cursillo. The Cursillo method includes a three-day weekend, which begins on Thursday evening and concludes on Sunday. The cursillo de cristianidad (Spanish: "little course in Christianity"), founded in 1949 by layman Eduardo Bonnín, Father Sebastián Gayá, and Bishop Juan Hervas of Ciudad Real, Spain, brings together a group of about 40 men or women from different races, educational backgrounds, and economic and social status for spiritual exercises conducted by a team of priests and laypersons. The Cursillo Movement received Canonical Recognition and approval of its statutes from the Holy See. It began when a group of men dedicated themselves to bringing the young men of Mallorca, Spain, to know Christ better. Nor were the first leaders just a chance collection of men. The Cursillo Movement was born in Spain in the 1940's, it came to the United States in 1957, and to the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese in 1962. The Cursillo Movement came to birth in the movements of renewal that preceded the second Vatican Council.
It is something to experience, not just to understand intellectually, which is implied in thinking of a course of instruction. It acts wholly within the Church and states only the Church's teaching. It is the time for the members of the Group Reunions to meet with members of other Group Reunions. It is lived by over 8 million Catholics around the world. The full title is "a little course in living what is fundamental for being a Christian, " but everyone simply calls it "Cursillo. " The groups responsible for preparations for the pilgrimage to St. James were the diocesan councils for the young men's branch of Catholic Action. It was formed by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit working in men who had dedicated themselves to bringing others to a knowledge of Christ. Cursillo is a spiritual renewal program that began in Spain in the 1940s and was introduced to the United States in the 1950s. It must be lived and experienced firsthand to appreciate its richness and fullness. Today it is a worldwide movement with centers in countries such as: Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Portugal, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, United States, Yugoslavia, and several African countries. The weekend is an opportunity to meet other individuals who are seeking to strengthen their faith. You will return from the weekend with a renewed commitment to work for Christ.
