For a mystery/thriller this book contains fantasy aspects and no doubt that will be unpalatable to those wanting a no nonsense book from the genre, my advice would be to give it a shot anyway – I think the book is worth it. Brilliantly unsettling, and rich with horror, it is great to see C. Tudor grapple with more supernatural elements in her writing and she proves herself not to be a one-trick pony, and a wonderful new talent in British Horror Fiction. Recently the village has suffered a murder and suicide; a mother has killed her son and then herself. I think the author's great strength is the ability to bring a setting and an era to life. The characterisation is tremendous. The Chalk Man is an exceptional novel, and one that is heavily influenced by It. You see C. Tudor has a way with words, they just flow and make you lose track of time. His CV is a little creative to say the least but he's quite charming and manages to secure the post. Absolutely brilliant. The book opens with a very horrific scene and I just cant get the scene out of my head when I'm reading this book.
Full of interesting, detailed characters, you're never sure who to trust. I don't think there were any specific best bits when it comes to The Taking of Annie Thorne but I will say that the book kept me gripped throughout and I did want to know what it was that was going to happen throughout. You got to read this book, its scary and a few times I was hiding behind my hands lol not daring to read another line but obviously carried on anyway haha, seriously good book, it's thrilling and scary and also funny in parts. There's hints of Stephen King in the writing and more than a nod to 'Pet Cemetery'. Another creepy offering from this author. You just need to dig. He is in serious financial debt but a trip back home, to where it all went wrong, offers Joe the only solution he can think of to survive the life and death situation he has put himself in. It made the reading of each timeline easier to follow, and was very interesting to observe how he has changed outside of the book. Lying his way into a teaching job at his former high school is the easy part. Everyone thought the worst. This is a creepy and atmospheric mystery tale that had this reader simply wanting to know what was ultimately behind the strange goings on. Clever horror/thriller with a touch of the supernatural. As Joe gets to know the children in his class, he's reminded of their parents and this is such an effective way of introducing flashbacks to a past that Joe thought he'd escaped. Then, Joe changed, joined a gang led by the local bad boy Stephen Hurst (Joe, Hurst, Fletcher and Chris aka Doughboy made up the gang along with Marie, Hurst's girlfriend) and his time with Annie diminished. The main character, Joe, is not particularly likeable, but interesting, yes. There is more than an element of Stephen King in Ms Tudor's storytelling, but that is not a bad thing; the basic plot reminds me a lot of 'Pet Semetary' - but I suppose that book was based on some scary folk legend in the first place – and of course authors have always drawn on classic stories for their inspiration. I didn't like this book at all - unlikeable characters, the typical alcoholic main man with lots of problems I can't relate to. Never fear: while the setup is the same, the plot takes off in a completely different direction, and you'll be glued to the page from the end of the gut-twisting prologue. Joe grew up in Arnhill, he went to the school, he had his gang of mates, and he had a sister. A gambling addict, he is in serious debt to serious people, and sees his return to Arnhill as a chance to escape briefly, get his head together, and potentially earn enough money to take him out of the red.
He comes back to his little hometown because of several reasons, and that is where history starts to repeat itself. I must admit that I have never read C. Tudor's previous book The Chalk Man so I was not aware of the quality of her writing.
