Sterling's life is wild, anarchic and apparently without limits, so he needs little convincing to drive her off into the sunset. 1) I Believe In Unicorns (2014). Since this was inspired by Leah's personal experience, is it interesting for the actors to have that as a resource on set?
Long-haired skater punk Sterling (Peter Vack) represents all things adventurous and romantic, and before long, they sweep each other off their feet (Davina has just as much a hand in it as he does). People who were teenagers in the 90s think about the Polaroid shots and see it as very organic. So in a lot of the sequences, there are a lot of colours that are organic to the film because of the expiring film. We ended up shooting that portion of the film separately and a separate stock motion animation shoot, which took a very long time. "I Believe in Unicorns" is a magical-realist journey hosted by an imaginative protagonist, but for all the delving into Davina's subconscious, the film represents an experience that is all too common for young women, to varying degrees. "And here I am wearing it, so it's like we're sisters. When I first saw first-time feature filmmaker Leah Meyerhoff's I Believe in Unico rns at SXSW 2014, one of the things I loved most about it was, just about every time I was afraid the plot would kick in – it didn't.
In addition to contributing to Loser City, Kayleigh occasionally writes for xoJane. I understand Meyerhoff's desire to keep the film focused on Davina–it is, after all, a largely autobiographical story according to what she has said in interviews–but I think the film loses out by never pointing the camera in the direction of the supporting characters when Davina isn't around them. Even the live action sequences are scattered with moments of sublime and wistful beauty, notably when Davina and Sterling come across a group of circus performers in the dark. Unicorns don't appear again in the movies, but they are mentioned multiple times in the books, and possess amazing properties. What ended up on the screen – I would say it was maybe 80 percent scripted. The Little Unicorn also looks like a lovely movie for this age bracket, though some of the reviewers have evidently shown it to younger children too.
I think it helps that I'm a female director. My agent connected me to his agent. LM: One thing we did with Peter's character Sterling that is his character is this drifter, this punk, so we went to a local punk club [in the East Bay], which I remember from my teenage years, and spent some time with the real kids there. Its beauty is that it allows us to share those imagined new worlds together. We actually got a grant from the Tribeca Film Institute which was very helpful. Mission accomplished. Danyah Miller is a patient performer with a honey-sweet voice – but she's a bit too normal for Blue, who likes her theatre as weird and wonderful as possible. This list pretty much proves that the stars of the show are unicorns.
What's the creative process behind that? So it did take some convincing, particularly to some of our investors and producers, to say this vision will work even though it's execution-dependent. She's kind of clinging to this lost childhood and these unicorns. From the feedback, this looks like it would be a safe bet for pretty much anyone. 3) My Little Pony (2017). Well, you're probably wrong. We spent a lot of time getting sounds that Leah wanted to use as part of the arsenal to lace around the edges of the film. Jack Toye spoke to filmmaker Leah Meyerhoff and sound mixer Joe Stillwater about their project. Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival. I went through the Edit Center program, and they sunk up the dailies, and we started cutting all the stuff that we shot during principal and second unit photography together, but then the animation extended the process. And Sterling's world was fiery, and blacks and reds, and kind of harder-edged colors, and we had him be a smoker, and there's these fireworks and sparklers, and kind of connected him to this dragon character.
