At first I wasn't sure about this one as for the first section it is so much about grief and sometimes grief narratives can feel so paralyzed, so stagnant. Months after that first meeting with Ryle, Lily has found the determination to start her big dream: to have a flower shop and to devote herself entirely to her project. He was Thiago to me. I particularly appreciate the writing in This Thing Between Us, which is filled with a surprising amount of levity, considering the book deals with such a bleak subject matter. I prefer my Cosmic Horror filled with chaos and menace and this book really delivers. It begins with sinister (Amazon like though amusingly renamed) technology that acquires an unpleasant degree of sentience even prior to Vera's death and proceeds to follow Thiago all the way to Colorado and back, taking stranger and scarier forms each time. But Ryle begins to convince her that he is deeply sorry: while he rushes to take care of her, he lightly cuts his hand with the remains of the pan. Funny, scary, and utterly heartbreaking. "

I admit to not being familiar with the work of author Gus Moreno, and was eager to read his highly acclaimed full-length debut novel entitled THIS THING BETWEEN US. Was their condo haunted and if so could this be connected to Vera's death and what follows? Atlas visits Lily at her shop and apologizes for what happened but warns her and hides a note with her number in her cell phone, telling her to call him if she needs him. The gore was quite as gratuitous as other horror novels but nevertheless unnecessary if you ask me. This is a political book about culture, migration, and identity... a fresh take on the genre that celebrates and pays tribute to its elements, from the gore to the cerebral stuff. This staircase somehow leads to the subway station where Vera was killed by an accidental collision with a young man that knocks her down the concrete staircase. I really enjoyed many things about this book. In the aftermath, a devastated Thiago escapes the political and media frenzy surrounding Vera's death — the young man was undocumented — by using Vera's life insurance money to leave Chicago and move to an isolated cabin in the cold Colorado wilderness. From here, I cannot go further into a synopsis. Since Thiago can no longer separate reality from fiction and believing that Vera is trying to get through to him this entire time, makes him become an unsure narrator, at best, yet you cannot look away. At points it dragged a bit, but I think those parts were needed for the story the author was telling. According to Dannie, how did his loss affect her family and the person she becomes? We don't see her have a vision like she does in the beginning of the novel, but that doesn't mean she isn't getting another premonition. Thiago's descent into a nightmare where space isn't real and time is meaningless is somehow understandable, because while his case is unique, death haunts us all.
I did listen to the audio version and the narration by Robb Moreira was so well done. The final pages of In Five Years are whimsical, bittersweet, and thought-provoking.
