I predict this will be a bestseller for 2019 and is ripe for a TV miniseries/drama so add it to your wishlists/preorders now. The Taking of Annie Thorne was creepy, atmospheric and I totally did not see the end coming. The powers of a child's imagination fuels this novel but sometimes the monster might be real and it haunts them still. Annie, after she comes back, is creepy. CJ has rapidly become one of my favourite authors and I will be buying myself a copy of this next year.
I am not a very big fan of S. King, I don't really enjoy his writing style, but when I read C. Tudor's book, WOW, it has the S. King 's vibe, it is compact, and not dragged unnecessarily. Last year's debut novel by The Chalk Man was such a memorable, creepy and menacing read, combining mystery with horror, a winning combination in my eyes. 5 stars again CJ Tudor! What a brilliant follow-up to "The Chalk Man"! I did have some sympathy for Joe, life hasn't been easy especially after the incident when his sister disappeared, but I did want to give him a shake. I will say that the writing was very atmospheric in the way that everything moves forward and comes apparent. Please note there may be some spoilers!
The story itself is a bit cheesy, your very typical horror story with predictable outcome but it's written so well and was so enjoyable, and I just think - what does it matter! If you haven't read CJ Tudor's debut The Chalk Man then why not? The suspense and tension are kept throughout, and there are many dark and nail biting moments to keep your attention. Tudors book 'The Chalk Man' since it's release day but unfortunately, I've never found the time to read it, after reading this book though I am making reading it a priority. I still don't know what went on and why I just think that some of it was down to not having the mythology in place. I didn't like this book at all - unlikeable characters, the typical alcoholic main man with lots of problems I can't relate to. The novel's protagonist, Joe Thorne, is a complicated character – presented as both sympathetic and selfish. I'm so glad I got the chance to read this book and hope my honest review is helpful as CJ deserves the recognition. Now Joe has been sent a mysterious email that tells him 'I know what happened to your sister. CJ Tudor's follow-up to her impressive debut is superbly chilling and delightfully creepy. Hell, Tudor even gives a nod to The A-Team! We know that Joe has arrived in Arnhill with an agenda so we're on our guard from the outset but I love the way that so much of the story is revealed through wonderful character portraits.
Does Joe remember everything that happened twenty-five years ago? What he is, however, is a compelling character who is ably assisted in both timelines by a stellar cast of supporting characters that drive the story forward as the mystery deepens. I happily put C. Tudor on my elusive list of favorite authors. It's a great storyline about a teacher, Joe Thorne, who returns to his childhood village where some horrible murders have taken place and where he continues to grapple with his own personal demons, problems and nightmares.
