This grotesquely violent and gruesome adventure was supposed to be Dutch wunderkind Verhoeven's big splash into English-language filmmaking; audiences ran screaming, but it has since become a big cult item. It's a romantic tragedy, and the weirdly understated quality of the pandemic certainly resonates today.
