In Shelby Van Pelt's novel Remarkably Bright Creatures, Tova Sullivan treasures her collection of Dala horses brought to the United States from Sweden decades ago by her mother. She takes a job as a night shift cleaner at the Sowell Bay Aquarium so she will have something to do to keep her busy. Remarkably Bright Creatures is about Tova Sullivan a 70-year-old woman who lost her son 30 years ago and recently lost her husband. I will happily linger in anecdotes of every bird who has ever alighted upon its branches, every squirrel who has scaled its trunk. Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power. The title of the book is Remarkably Bright Creatures, and I think it applies not only to intelligence but a bright, burning light inside each character that is still there, just waiting to shine. Marcellus' voice is my favorite, as his intelligence is underestimated by most humans, and you can hear his laugh at this in his witty, snarky thoughts.
