Fingers crossed that the next book in the Dance of Thieves series will embody everything that made the first spectacular. Kazi's backstory and Jase's history were so intriguing and emotional. I learn something from each one.
Dance of Thieves has a lot of ties to TRC as it explores the aftermath of The Beauty of Darkness. No judgement is given, though it is indicated the queen might "talk" with Synové about the antelope blood, as if her actions deserve a slight reprimand rather than immediate dismissal from the guard. Seriously, pick these books up! Reading about protagonists who have morally shady areas but also redeeming ones is one thing. As much as that is a preposterous notion, im thinkin its not such a bad trade. Do you have any plans to write about her life before Terravin; her role as a spy and the "romance" that lead to her daughter? She covers television, books, movies, anime, and conventions in the NYC area. If you look at the map inside the cover, you can see the similarities, and some of the names are variations of present day regions and cities. An all-around great read that I highly recommend! Kazi's friends were great. ❌ THE MAGIC and the history behind how the world started has always been really confusing to me in this world. Everyone felt like a unique character, with their own dark pasts that helped create who they were in the present. And a bit childlike. Amazingly, she never broke a bone until she caught a basketball in gym class.
D They were so cute and sweet as a couple, disagreed over everything, and held many secrets from one another, but that only made the story infinitely more addicting! I'm well aware that I'm a year late to this book, but honestly I'm so excited that I have to wait less than a week for the sequel, because Dance of Thieves ended on a brilliant cliffhanger that has me itching to pick up the sequel ASAP! "It's awkward, isn't it? " I am almost finished with book one of "The Remnant Chronicles" and OMG.. You moved promptly to one of my best authors.
So my average rating would be 4. At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements. The Remnant Chronicles will always have a special place in my heart for various reasons that are too sentimental and a bit childish to list; all you need to know is that Mary E. Pearson is probably one of my favorite writers and that this book surpassed every expectation I might have had. The world building was excellent, and we danced our way to a compelling ending that sets up the next book in the series quite nicely, without the feeling that this book was unfinished. However, I will say, the romance does take center stage in this book. Secondly, this series already feels like it has much more of a distinct plot and direction than The Kiss of Deception had. Friends Annie and Lee were children from very different circles when Atreus killed Lee's father, dragonlord Leon Stormscourge, ending the uprising on the bloodiest day in Callipolis' history. Review and rating to come. But something was missing. So descriptive and mesmerizing. At first I wasn't keeping track of what the words meant and then when I went back I couldn't remember what I said! The ending of Dance of Thieves gave us a little glimpse of what was in store, but trust me when I say that you are not ready for what is to come.

Choices are complex, and the consequences for all could be deadly. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys high fantasy worlds, great romance, addictive plots, secret missions, and thieving characters. Two things about Dance of Thieves especially impressed me: Mary's solid and consistent world-building that ties this story to The Remnant Chronicles and the early days of Jase's ancestors just after the devastation (see above) as well as the sheer romance of this story. After the war that the original trilogy led up to, the world has changed a lot and will never be quite the same. Like I said I'm not sure.
And they're both assigned to assassinate each other. Related: October Favorites & November TBR]. Another thing I loved about this book was the dual POV. Listen guys, this book got it all. "Hear the language that isn't spoken, for everyone can hear spoken words, but only a few can hear the heart that beats behind it. After a meeting ripe with danger, dislike, and distrust, Kazi and Jase land in an unfortunate situation, forcing them to overcome their differences and help one another in order to survive. Kazi is very much the pinnacle of YA heroines that I enjoy reading about. I definitely felt a bit of a missed opportunity here, I wish the enemies to lovers dynamic was drawn out a bit more and made to feel a bit more like a slow burn romance. Read as an audiobook). "The ghosts, they never go away. In short, I loved it, but I will say it was long and took me a while to get my bearing. Honestly, it was very well worth the wait. In effect, she becomes disturbingly like the people she claims to judge. Kazi is lured to Hell's mouth by her companion / lover Jase, but instead of having to sneak into the palace, she believes is providing sanctuary to the captain, Kazi has been invited in as a guest allowed to roam the city. Once again, the trope in this is enemies to friends to enemies to fake dating to lovers to enemies. I would've finished it in one sitting, rather than two, had I not also been reading other books simultaneously, ugh.
He can punch as many people as he wants as long as it is in service to the family or in retaliation for violence they committed. A need I couldn't name. So very well written in all.
After witnessing her mother being stolen, Kazi shut herself off to most people. I'd also like to make note that although this is technically a separate series from the Remnant Chronicles, as is the case with the Grisha trilogy and the Six of Crows duology, it would be beneficial to read the Remnant Chronicles first (hence, why I'm glad that I re-read the Kiss of Deception and finally finished the remainder of the trilogy beforehand). Everyone will have to make a choice: Restore the old regime, support the First Protector and the new caste system he created, or look for a new way, no matter what the cost. Another reason why I'll read TKOD. I must have missed it or it was that bad I couldn't see it. There is an ominous warning on Jase and Kazi's journey back, and they are attacked before they can even set foot in Hell's Mouth. I mean so many amazing tropes were used here 🥰 Even though it all happened a little fast in terms of page count, I felt like the circumstances that pushed them together still made the romance pacing really believable. It's sent many generations ago as the world of the Remnant is developing and shapes so much foundation for the series to come!

Re Read #2 with Naomi and Héloïse 💖💖. This could, of course, have been an interesting theme to explore–what actions are justifiable? 🆗 YOU CAN DEFINITELY read this without first reading The Remnant Chronicles but just know there are a lot of references and definitely spoilers for the original series. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK! Quick Stats: Overall: 5/5 Stars. However, their lack of moral questioning is incredibly disturbing.
I'm desperately hopeful that the next novel turns it around for me and I enjoy this series so much more. It could have been soo much better. Their dragons are finally mature enough for them to compete for Firstrider, a position of power that can give Lee back a small part of what his family lost. As I typically mention, I don't need to have 'likeable' characters to enjoy a novel, but for this one the reader was obviously meant to favour these two. For the bulk of the book, both characters are obsessed with determining the moral culpability of others and judging and then punishing them for it. Kazi explains away the majority of her decisions with the excuse that she made a vow to her queen. It's really really good.
