Billie, Mary Alice, Helen and Natalie have spent the past 40 years.... As a thank you for their contribution to ridding the world of various drug lords, sex traffickers, Nazis, dictators, etc. They're forced to flee while simultaneously solving the mystery of why their employers have put targets on their backs. They just didn't seem like "killers of a certain age" to me! Speaking of, what are the odds that there's some super-benevolent organization out there that just wants to keep the world safe and trains assassins for this purpose? This book was also selected as a Book of the Month pick so if you need anymore endorsement, this is it! But, surprisingly it WASN'T because they were ASSASSINS. Deanna Raybourn's Killers of a Certain Age is a timely and very entertaining novel about a foursome (Billy, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie) of 60 something women who were employed for an A-list organization (the Museum) of assassins for forty years. As always, this is my opinion only so do please check out the positive reviews. Thankfully, Deanna Raybourn is always tasteful about it, never over-indulging in descriptions of gore and violence. She holds out her arm, indicating the cabin behind her. In a world where no one values their skills anymore, they find themselves targeted for termination by their own order, but needless to say, it turns out to be a huge mistake.
I really enjoyed this unique tale and its characters. Friends & Following. Not so in this case, which is understandable, considering our protagonists who can only work with subterfuge and trickery. Even if society as a whole is ready to dismiss them as no longer of use, they're crafty enough to know that's not true. She watches him for a second as his hands move over the switches and levers, working through the preflight check. That they have faithfully served for forty years. Apparently, their organization wants them dead (for spoilery reasons) and tries to take them out on their retirement cruise. Inclusivity at its best with a cast of bad@ss, strong, female main characters.
If you like dry wit, mature characters, and plenty of action then this is definitely a book to consider reading. I really, really liked this book. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize they've been marked for death.
There's also a lot of on-page murder, but because everyone who is dispatched is quite terrible, it didn't bother me too much, especially not when they hunt nazis. Thank you, NetGalley!
