This book had my heart racing, and i cried so many times! Biased review - but I can 100% confirm that the author worked really hard on this! Many thanks to the publisher for providing my ALC, and to Shelly for sending me her bonus hardcover! Characters Chiamaka and Devon are both complex yet relatable characters. Ace of Spades promises a thrilling mystery set at an elite prep school. Even more interesting is the book's epilogue where Black parents are still willing to risk their children's safety by allowing them to be educated in prejudiced institutions. Devon lives in a poor neighbourhood, dealing drugs to support his mother and constantly hiding his relationships with boys to avoid her disapproval—and that of the gang members on his block, who he knows will hurt him for being gay. Ace of Spades - Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé.
I look away from him, pretending that the BFG hasn't got a scary emo brother called Ward. Ace of Spades left me unable to form any thoughts beyond "holy shit?!?!?! " Unsurprisingly, race is a running theme throughout the book that the author explores through her worlds apart main characters. This is the farthest thing from the truth and the way that this is illustrated through their relationship is gold.
Thank you to netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for a review. Both characters have spent so much of their lives fighting to escape the pitfalls of systemic racism that they blamed themselves—their past actions, sexual preferences, and histories—before ever considering they were victims of a system built specifically to target people who look like them, who dare to be great. Ace of Spades never shies away from how all-encompassing and rotten the system is at its very core, no matter how much the characters or even the readers may want to reject or deny that horror. These are all phrases that come to mind when I look back at this story.
I won't spoil it here, but if you're a white person reading this book (and you should), it can and will make you deeply uncomfortable. When you read a thriller you want the plot to be fast paced but not too fast paced that the big reveal at the end becomes underwhelming, Ace of Spades did just that and I'm so here for it! The first half largely sticks to this formula, and I found myself a little underwhelmed initially if I am being honest. Recently with all the racial tensions i've built some walls and instilled in my head the narrative that all people are racist until they prove that they're not. Niveus is not even a PWI; it's simply white. Because, one, Jared? This stunning debut is a must read that deserves to become the next big thing. The promising start to their final year is cut short when anonymous messages from someone called Aces revealing personal secrets about them both to the entire school.
I usually don't read synopsis so I was completely unprepared for what was going to come. I'm all for structure. However, though the book provides much-needed representation of LGBTQ+ characters, as well as characters of color, the characterization itself is off, as a few of the characters read older than they are. I think he's a sweetheart who needs to be protected at all costs. Ace of Spades follows Chiamaka Adebayo and Devon Richards, a biracial student and a Black student respectively, who attend a white private school where they face harassment from an annonymous source who broadcasts their secrets to the entire school. It's interesting that her parents chose to send her to a school where she'd be in such a stark minority. I enjoyed him more than Chiamaka but the character was weighed down by having all the issues thrown at him like being poor with a dad in jail, having a single mother with multiple kids she was struggling to raise, having a drug dealing friend in addition to being a young gay boy struggling with his sexuality. Chiamaka's ruthlessness is the result of her experience growing up as a Black girl in a very anti-Black world. A sign that maybe I'm gonna get into college—make my ma proud. Buddy read with Melanie ♡. I'm fairly new to the dark academia genre, but this review really did put things in perspective of how widely the term gets thrown around these days. Àbíké-Íyímídé wastes no time jumping into the brunt of the mystery, creating a tremendous amount of suspense only a few pages in. I'm pretty sure that, even though I've been here for almost four years, no one else knows I exist.
Ace of Spades is an excellent book I think EVERYONE should read. Chiamaka was not the "Queen Bee" she was advertised to be, for as we see later in the novel, her status was manufactured the whole time. It was important that readers see everything unfold layer by layer. I really hope people start coming to their senses and realize that at the end of the day we all are humans and we have to be proud of having people of different color, race and cultures. I liked that there were dual narrators and they didn't try to do male/female voices when it came time for dialogue. However, the theme of this book was powerful and influential. Summary (from Amazon): All you need to know is... Yet, she's also vulnerable and all she really want is to be good enough. I was starting to think that I was growing out of young adult books but then Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé went 'no you fucking don't get back here' and I was saved. Once the two stories come together it's magic. It's like it's tempting the outside world to peer in. And I also wanted it to relate to people in a way they'd be able to understand, and US-centric stories are what's globally understood. I hope this is a trend we continue to see more of in literature. But for once, the system didn't beat them down.
And that's saying a lot, seeing as Niveus Academy is a school that runs on pointlessness. I love the plot please, when you see something good you have to say it and this was really good. Chiamaka finishes, flashing a wicked grin as the hall erupts in applause once again.
Everything that devon went through from being outed to the constant physical abuse and being backstab by one of the people he considered his best friend was hard to read but so engaging and it drew me in every second. Despite Chi's empowered nature, her inability to realize that race can act as a barrier makes her vulnerable. Devon at Juilliard and Chi at Yale. Can't get enough of them! Displaying 1 - 30 of 11, 243 reviews. Devon is a scholarship student who plays music and dreams of Julliard. There's a loud click, and a large picture fills the screen: a rectangular playing card with A s in each corner and a huge spade symbol at the center. Chiamaka Adebayo is Niveus Private Academy's reigning 'It Girl', so it comes as no surprise when she's named Head Prefect for the fourth year in a row. Because they were inanimate until either Devon or Chiamaka came around.
Instead, she drags the microphone forward, not yet done with her soliloquy. The narration was good and made for a quick and easy read despite the page length. Àbíké-Íyímídé masterfully builds tension and suspense as Aces preys on her characters, slowly tearing them down, making readers just as anxious waiting on the next just when you think you've got it figured out, you realize the great mystery is you weren't thinking big enough. Peeling back the layers of insidiousness present in this book invoked physical reactions in me, especially once we reached the truly rotten core. When I'm at university, some of my friends' parents literally pay for their entire rent or even tuition. By the time readers get to the big reveals, the ultimate purpose of the book becomes shocking. So just writing the book and working out how the actual characters were going to get over what was tormenting them was also helping me with my own issues. Àbíké-Íyímídé expertly wields dual points of view to maximize suspense, cleverly jumping from one to the next, ending each character with a brutal cliffhanger, something that left me gasping. People still apply here? Devon does not participate in the social aspect of Niveus. This is one of the few times I loved the writing and the characters so much—both are sharp, smart, and brilliantly crafted. Some of us are working like three jobs at once. Secrets that could destroy their futures and their lives.
With thanks to Usborne for the advanced review copy. Everything was going smoothly when one day each of them get a message from an enigmatic person (Aces) who threatens to reveal their deepest and personal secrets…. I felt like I was holding my breath, getting ready for what would come next… only to be gasping out loud when I realized what was actually happening. First off, I wanted to say that I didn't realize I skipped a week until I got home on Friday and went oh, crap, my review! Silently, Headmaster Ward opens it, the paper's crinkle amplified to a blaring shriek through the speakers. Chiamaka is the logic and drive to Devon's heart creating a perfect balance between our protagonists, I didn't prefer one perspective over the other, they were both so interesting. Chiamaka and Devon lead very different lives, but I was equally invested in both their stories.
I'm in awe with how seamlessly and unapologetically Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé incorporates so many layers and complexities to her social commentary. Let's say that Niveus has a very small student population of 500. If you haven't read this book yet you're doing a disservice to yourself. Coming from an Islamic School Librarian standpoint, without exception this book would be considered inappropriate. I adore popular mean girl characters and find them really fun to read about, especially once they're given depth and Chiamaka did not disappoint. This book was one big bout of trauma p*rn, in that the characters suffered for nothing. Without them, I don't play as well. Devon's father is absent and it is learned he was executed on death row, his mom works three jobs, he has younger brothers and they struggle financial so that he has a chance at education. Without these, life at Niveus would still be an endless drudge of gossip, money, and lies. "As your Senior Head Prefect, I will work hard to ensure that our final year at Niveus is the best one yet, starting with the Senior Snowflake Charity Ball at the end of the month.
Later on, Chi starts a relationship with Belle, Jamie's ex-girlfriend.
