So what I did with that energy was I kind of married the writing and the intention to an energy that I kind of have when I'm on stage, that live energy where I'm trying to express emotions to the room. Meek Mill, Kathleen Hanna, Kim Gordon, Yaeji, ANOHNI, Bun B, Jeff Tweedy, and more share the issues driving them to the polls. He fucking snapped on the first verse. It's my least favorite beat on the album so far, but it's still pretty good. OPEN MIKE EAGLE: We made a record. It's just like, no matter how many times I tell people like there was no way to really communicate it. But keep your people close or they can get consumed. Mike goes from "I wipe my son's ass and get shit on my hands" to "Fuck you if you're a white man that assumes I speak for black folks /. This fucking beat is amazing. Everything about this song is perfect to me. I have to ask myself those questions.
For his most recent album Component System With The Auto Reverse, Open Mike Eagle looks into the past when he first fell in love with hip-hop. Hand wrote just like a letter. It carries a really pessimistic attitude, as you could've assumed from the title. The Devil himself can't resist the raw dialect. It feels contrived like it was made by an art student to show how different he is. OPEN MIKE EAGLE: I think he might be the forerunner in terms of saying uncomfortable truths about himself on records. I loved the melody he used, and, like I said with the previous track, every bar has me sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to hear what he says next. Me like Ronda Rousey. I might have to reconsider the list of my 10 favorite rappers… Hmmm… Okay, if I switch anyone out, it's gonna be Busta Rhymes. Told The Phantom guide my hand and I drew Cyclops. It don't seem to fall in line with everything else.
I know what a hood feels like. Sometimes I dial in on something super one subject, and just write on that. ALI: But you're just like, "Oh, OK. Maybe that's just in Portland. " Like, the people who still wanted the bigger acts, they still went to Coconuts and Sam Goody. OPEN MIKE EAGLE: Where do they hide the black people in Portland?! The second verse was dope af.
It didn't take a genius to sniff it as somethin' fiendish. OPEN MIKE EAGLE: – so I tend to look at that like, oh, that's great that that's happening, but it feels like, I mean, maybe a marketing decision? When I first started hearing about people going to Europe, I felt like they were telling me that it was more about the purity out there, and I think over the course of time I've been going there, I watched that change. Oh wait… He was on the remix of Huzzah by Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, right? Like, for an example. But I'm going to go in there anyway. That's just such the spirit of it, and eventually some survive and get wise and complete the circle. Dudes is wired like that, it's still an all-case buildin'. Track 6: Doug Stamper (Advice Raps) Feat. We don't have hit records, and that's not because we don't like hit records. OPEN MIKE EAGLE: Kanye's vulnerable.
I'll just say, with my experience in that world, that's not always the case. Gonna form a union like a local group of teamsters. By the way, THANK YOU to the Patrons who have supported me so far for not intentionally requesting shitty albums just to see me shit on them. And all party people should stand up. And sometimes it's just accidental. It seems like it's harsh on people. Just cause my career is really about going places and having a show, and the next time the show's better.
If you have just as much resources that you didn't have to necessarily have on your – resources from other entities, if it's straight from the distributors or if it's from Apple or if it's from –. I think that opened things up a lot. And the cost of that being absent from the conversation makes me crazy sometimes. Tracks 5 through 11 didn't really blow me away like the others did. We talk here about structural things effecting a lot of people, like "investors" backing artists and white kids at rap shows, and the hypervisibility of black men. I'll be sneaking up on rappers just to choke 'em with a broom. And I find myself having to tell all the super talented broke rappers I know that that's how it goes, that they're not just going to sit on their couch and be dope and things are going to happen for them. Just publishing the same shit that everybody publishes isn't a good business model. Maybe I'm too much of a Drake fan. And then also there's this way that, as an entertainer, artist, performer, you have to sort of curate how you appear in the world or how – think about how people might perceive what you do or what you say or whatever. I'm not crazy about the hook tho. FRANNIE: I want to proffer a theory about –.
I could walk past them on the street and have no clue. And that's just the basics. ALI: But wasn't it like that in the beginning? And people who aren't entertainers or anything like that now know what that is like, now are engaged with that, and are cool with everybody acting like that. He ain't really you!
It's just society has such an inside scope into someone's private life and a say, and what you say and think and feel actually now is adding to the trouble that you're dealing with. Think that would suffice, but really it's just the beginnin'. MF Doom seems to be a key inspiration here (lyrically if not necessarily sonically) so fans of his may feel at home. It's been times I wanted people to answer to. ALI: What did you leave behind? I think miscellaneous. The album is exactly what the title implies: it's a collection of songs that contain humorous, yet dark, cynical, occasionally critical statements on modern Hip Hop and society in general. I'm real bad at tellin' stories y'all. The instrumentals are varied, from the grimy "A History of Modern Dance" to the lively "Qualifiers" to the building trip that is "Idaho". But typically I'm thinking about different things. Like, I wanted feedback, but couldn't get it from anywhere.
FRANNIE: Yeah, "South Side '93 Bulls" is my jam. It's a good song tho. I mean, "Nice For What, " is he just read the room and gave that out. I got a giant project man and it's right around the corner in terms of being able to be announced.
