I usually assume that older books will take a bit to become accustomed to the older writing style, but this one was an easy read. Which is what happens. The novel was a fairly typical gothic creeper of its day. Adapted by seasoned author Cavan Scott with artistry by Jose Maria Beroy, it offers a fresh new perspective of a well-established show. Throughout the book, he gives us little bits to chew on; say, for instance, Moncharmin's fictional memoir, and the Persian's written account being taken for some of the last chapters in the novel. But in the book, he grabs her and forces her to look at his face, then takes her hand and uses her fingernails to scratch his own face. He threatens to blow up the opera house if she refuses. But he was too ugly! After a time at the opera house, she begins hearing a voice, who eventually teaches her how to sing beautifully. As if Raoul doesn't truly love her, but just likes her for her voice and fame. The Phantom of the Opera.

Worth visiting the original but it's very much a piece of serialized 19th century fiction that is actually improved by modern adaptations. It is here that he becomes a political assassin for the Shah and develops his ruthless method of killing with a noose, an ability he uses many times during "The Phantom of the Opera. The book makes you feel uneasy about not knowing and sets the tone brilliantly. Because they were that cool. If it wasn't for the music, I for sure wouldn't like the 2004 movie as much, but how can you talk about the 2004 movie and not think of the music?? Beginning his career as a crime reporter and war correspondent, he lived an adventurous life that took him to Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and even into North Africa disguised as an Arab. While it doesn't match France's literary merit heritage (thing that blew out of proportion over the last century anyway), THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a narrative jewel that measures to the grand masters of gothic fiction. What one finds instead is a characteristic Lloyd Webber project - long on pop professionalism and melody, impoverished of artistic personality and passion - that the director Harold Prince, the designer Maria Bjornson and the mesmerizing actor Michael Crawford have elevated quite literally to the roof. May 14, 2013Thoroughly enjoyable. We hear about one sultana he seems to have been into and it seems like he would kill people using his "Punjab lasso" for entertainment for her. This is an amazing production though, the sets, the wardrobe, the singing. To further allude to Lucifer, Leroux describes Erik's home underneath the opera house dark and ghastly and the musical that Erik writes, Don Juan Triumphant, is described as an opera that "burns, " further alluding to Hell. He hears her in her dressing room saying, "Poor Erik" and thinks, "At first, he thought he must be mistaken.
