As it turns out the novel is adept at genre bending- mixing suspense and mystery with supernatural elements, while painting a vivid portrait of the willing sacrifices parents will make in order to protect or save their children. As a side story, one of the cops struggles to believe Lauren. I absolutely love these types of tales and found myself devouring this one! The clues, the investigation and a determined officer added to the tension and intrigue. Maybe the woman is real and this is a dark fairy tale, and maybe she is not and this is just a book about a woman struggling with mental illness. This book leans more into the magical realism with a buttload of horror. It's an endless routine of feeding, changing, soothing and lulling to sleep only to have the cycle repeat again as soon as she thinks she will have a moment to rest. It's impossible not to feel for her character and live inside her mind and heart. The synopsis spoke to my inner child. I honestly have no idea what to expect for the future but it seems like the show is moving in a different and interesting direction.
