The approach trail is well traveled so it is not too difficult to find the cutoff or follow the trail itself. We made a quick stop at Indian Arch before heading on around the ridge to the Adena Arch and beyond. It's a real trail, well used, easy to follow. The first scramble starts at the base of the cliff and progressively gets steeper the higher one gets. It is possible to climb without them, but it's easier with them, so you may find yourself sidestepping back and forth across the boulder in search. The trail is no longer on a traditional map of the gorge because a few people have actually passed away while attempting to hike this route. As legend has it these indentations were carved by the Adena people over a thousand years ago, though their true age and origin is likely lost to the annals of history. If you'd like to try a more adventurous exit route, you can follow the cliff line. Again, I have seen some climb in slick soled shoes, which creates a danger for them and for those climbing behind them. He had seen my weakness here; he knew how easy it would be for me to back down. If you're not confident in your ability to do this, then take the upper trail, which begins at the left corner of the parking lot.
