Sometimes the Shocks just get worn out. As seabeach740 said you need to look at the bumper stops and if at least one is not springy then twist them out and investigate. My trunk won't stay up for ever. You'll find the same type of "bumper stops" under your hood. Most likely the spring has popped out, you may be able to find the spring and put it back together. The pressure from the oil inside the hatch shock caused the frozen/weakened seals to crack and leak oil out. I'm not sure how the 4 doors are. I bought 1 for $10 and now my trunk works like it should. There's no hatch struts.

I'd be curious to know how. You should be able to press down on the smaller, pop up cylinder & it should spring back up. It can be a bear when the hood gets stuck closed because the ejector buttons have stopped working. Something is probably wrong with the springs like doc said. My trunk does the same thing, lemme know if you fix it. With mine I can open it on the first try if I'm holding onto the trunk and lift exactly when it releases.
I will get the link from my friend who did it to his car. Don't look for springs - there are "bumper stops" that get stuck in the down position that you need to find. If anyone is interested, I will find the link that gives you a parts list and instructions to just get rid of those bars and use the gas struts, like the hatchbacks use. These get dirty, break, and just don't spring back up after a while if you don't keep them clean & lubricated. Believe it or not the spoiler does make a BIG difference. It uses those arm things. I assume when i press the fob or trunk switch it should open enough so that i can manually open it all the way. I got new struts and it does the same thing. I have no clue as to why it just won't stay up. Thats what i'm doing till i find someone that sells lift supports that aren't the StrongArm brand cuz those don't fit. Can't be to hard of a fix.
As I was installing the stereo in the sedan today, The trunk lid kept falling on my head until I rigged up a latch using a coat-hanger. I have heard you can install a spring on them to help make them stronger. It seems that each side of the trunklid has one of those bars attached to at towards the back of the car, which then crosses under the decklid towards the front and other side of the vehicle.

Check the little plastic springs that pop out on the trunk lid-they may be stuck "in" or broken. That should solve the problem. Are you familiar with feature that lets you set the hatch open height by manually moving it to the height you want then holding down the hatch button until it beeps? One side is attached to the little post that sticks out from the curve in the hinge, and the other is attached to some kind of plastic clip up in the corner of the trunk.
