I really am not a ginormous fan of poetry unless is pretty old (for example, I love Edgar Allan Poe), but this book had a good subject. This may be fiction but the things that go on in the camps and the work that Rachel finds herself doing, was sadly all too real. And when I die (probably the same way as my dad, of a heart attack) I want to join them all with my cameras, snapping photos of Zara's flowers like I did at Chatsworth. I am personally more of a fan of tightly formatted rhyming verse but the flyaway style of this poetry works well with the emotional narrative it's telling. Often we see the pictures and read stories about the adults. The wall, wondering what. I rate it 5 stars because the details and the format of the book. Thoroughly researched, what I appreciate about this story most is that Kummerow really dove into the children's perspectives, which will remind readers of perhaps, "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas", or even "Life is Beautiful", which means it can easily be picked up by younger readers as well. Kummerow writes realistic historical fiction. Set It Off with the eight-fitay. This book shows that all of the inmates of the concentration camps had impossible odds, the lucky ones surviving until the liberation by the Americans and their allies. Without this goal, I feel Rachel may just have laid down and given up as many others did and who could really blame them or her?
Sonya Sones has a great gift for creating novels in verse that read like someone whispering truth in your ear. Also, I have a 4-yr old daughter at home and when I was reading about all that little Mindel was going through, I couldn't help but feel pain at the thought that she's a little child, innocent and pure, like my own. I didn't get anything out of this book and would maybe place this book as one of the worst I've ever read. They are bounced around from camp to camp, but when they arrive at the Bergen-Belsen camp, they are separated, never to know if they will ever find their way back to each other. All in all, it's definitely worth the read.
