I'm simply relying on unreliable narrators to give me the facts and I want to experience these things first-hand through the characters. The technology system was unique, the religion fully realized and unique as well, with a well rounded cast of characters it's definitely worth the read. I'm glad I finally read The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn, which the perfect option for fantasy fans looking for a fun adventure. And to be honest this is 50% of the reason this is a four star read and not a five star read.
I'd never heard about it before, but you had me at heists and dragons. And so many other things are explained again and again. To be honest, there are a lot of good things in this book, but… But the best of them all was that this book was highly fun. While sitting in the bar of the Delhi Recreational Club where he's staying, an attractive woman joins his table to await her husband. Different Grit causes different effects for as long as it burns: Drift Grit causes items in its sphere to become weightless, while Barrier Grit creates an impenetrable barrier. Ard is a charismatic lead, Grit an intriguing and well-implemented idea and so, even with my issues, I'd certainly consider reading future books in the series as there is promise and potential to be found within the pages of Whitesides debut adult fantasy work. But more on that later.
This is the kind of thing. If you like your fantasy novels full of action and adventure, and you want happy endings, but not the insipidness of a castle parapet kiss in the sunset, this is the book for you. Things moved WAY too quickly between them and the whole time my brain rejected the idea, because to my mind, they still barely even knew each other. From the creator of the wildly popular blog Wait but Why, a fun and fascinating deep dive into what the hell is going on in our strange, unprecedented modern times. Again, this is all only my opinion, but I think that second act would've been so much stronger for it. Loved that Raek was not only the muscle, but also the clever one in terms of maths and science and equations, reminded me a lot of Jean. Nobody inherently has magic, but instead cause effects by detonating small bombs of a substance known as Grit. There are compounds and powders, collectively known as 'grit', that can be used to achieve all manner of different effects.
A refreshing aspect is that we are allowed inside the mind of the mentor figure, religious leader Isle Halavand. Then a team of harvesters has to track down the hardened poo pile (while trying not to die) which is taken to a factory to be processed. Narrated by: Tim Urban. Also the love-subplot could have been ditched as well because it didn't really go anywhere (at least not in this book, but it might develop in coming installments). Deep in the Yukon wilderness, a town is being built. However, given that this is the first of a trilogy, I am willing to assume that meaner, more credible baddies will rear their heads as the series progresses. This involves the substance Grit, which is a by-product obtained from the waste of dragons. The monetary system and the magic are based on the diminishing population of dragons in the world. As strong as the main characters are, the secondary cast does not lose out, and there is a strength and diversity to them that only deepens and strengthens the rest of the worldbuilding and Whitesides does an excellent job of giving them all individual voices and motivations. This is a novel that defies anything close to categorisation. Act 1 and 3 generally seem fine, honestly, I wouldn't change anything there. This gives us a chance to share the journey of discovery as well as the burden of knowledge with him and have empathy for the protagonist who doesn't yet know as much as the reader. I think their relationship being so real is why page 627 hurt so much. A Journey Alone Across Canada's Arctic. Yes, it is a chunky book. This review will likely be a long one, mainly because I've been reading this book for a long time and I have a lot of thoughts.

A book can't be all showing and it would be a massive headache if it was, but there are certain things that really benefit from being shown to the reader rather than told, things like growing relationships, (you can't convince me Ardor loves Quarrah when I haven't personally seen the development to back it up. But all the different grit is basically made from barbecue dragon poop. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness—and, because he blamed the press for his mother's death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight. Throw in the gloomy mood that clings to him, and the last thing he needs is a smart-mouthed, gorgeous new neighbor making him feel things he doesn't have the energy to feel. Let me just say that any world with dragons has got to be the best.
Narrated by: George Blagden. The material used determine the type of 'Grit' you end up with. Our past might create our patterns, but we can change those patterns for the the right tools. Written by: Dave Hill. There was no fun in learning about the magic. It was interesting as well as nice to see religious people portrayed as something other than crazy. All in all the trio are well depicted by Whitesides. Unfortunately for me, the negatives outweighed the positives and I will not be continuing the series. "It was easy, " the man replied. But a bigger part of me is wondering why I didn't read this the second I bought it because it was awesome. The ending overall was exciting and satisfying, but I do think the final few lines feel rushed. He believes there is a major threat to their island kingdom and only by going against his Order can he help save the world. "I followed the sounds of utter chaos. If it had been on the shorter side 500pages or so, I think it may have worked a little better.
