Carbon fiber/nylon composite blend with toe hook. Their new system is in its infancy but it works and feels good! FLAD™ – The higher the Forward Lean angle on your hi-backs, the quicker you heel-edge turns. Review: Burton Step On Bindings. Heel Buckle: This connects with the heel cleat locking the heel of the boot. Compatibility: Compatible with all Major Mounting Systems. It left the arch of my foot fatigued and tired in uneven terrain. The thing that makes these bindings different is how easy to get in and out of them is, without having to strap in - just having to click in - so how easy is it really? I understand that Boa is easier for some people but hopefully they bring a lace boot into the collection in the future. I want the convenience but not if it comes at the cost of losing some response or control. It is far from being perfect but its the first time we found a quick release binding to improve response.
Re:Flex™ Binding System – Offers more flex, feel, and cushioning than traditional disc bindings, in a package that's universally compatible with all current mounting systems, including 4x4, 3D® (via Burton Rider Service), and the Channel®. As far as the original set worked, it was fine. Well from the moment I dropped in I felt completely at ease with the system and any previous thoughts of me being catapulted out of my bindings diminished. One of the factors that made it so easy to get along with the Step On system! There is very good slow speed cushy landing friendly shock absorption happening with the Burton Step On Binding. The Burton Step On Binding needs a Burton compatible boot and has less boot to binding adjustability but its super easy on/off and is really responsive. I have read a bit about people complaining about "hot spots", though I had zero problems with that.
I weigh the bindings with screws and discs. So yes, you do have to reach down after finishing a run to detach from your board. Hi-Back: 50:50 Carbon Fiber/Nylon Composite Blended, FLAD™. First, it's expensive at around $650 for the boot-binding combo. Basically everything in the Burton range that has an "X" in the model name is the stiffer version, except when they are being sneaky like with the "Cartel X". Rider in Mind: I would recommend this for anyone that has leg or back issues and can't bend over to unstrap. It also felt like the front part of the Ruler would flex too much forward and the back wouldn't move which is pretty weird compared to traditional boots/bindings. There is not much twist in the Burton Step On Bindings high back but its got a little more give than the Step On X. There is very little high back rotation or forward lean adjustability as well. If you add up all the time you've spent at the top of runs, squatting, plopping down onto your rear, de-icing buckles, and wasting energy on your strap bindings, you'd have an extra pow run per year. Keeping the boots flexing the same way as a regular snowboard boot allows for a totally familiar feeling in the ride. The Burton Step On Binding is the same weight as the other Step On's and most Re:Flex bindings. This is a binding that lets you get up on edge with ease, but there's a lot of movement that seems to cause a loss in power transmission.
Very similar to the Malavita Re:Flex overall. I tried without having that done up and my ankle felt less supported. This happened to me a few times, but it's not as big a deal as some people might think, if you notice it's not fully engaged push down on the heel and drive it into the binding. Turn Ons/Swipe Right: Incredibly Fast & Symmetrical Response.
I am going to guess (the flex ratings haven't come out at time of writing) that these are going to be rated medium flex, given that they share the same name as Burton's Genesis Re:Flex and Genesis EST bindings, but they felt stiffer than that to me. I can't say anything about the ratchets here - as there are none! Check out video for more tech info. One thing I noticed was during the first day of testing I had a bad heel cleat (they have a recall and all Burton dealers have the part) which caused me to unclick from the second lock and gave me a bit of heel play. No play or loosening, just forgot about them and rode.
I needed double boa, or at least something that would help lock my ankles down, so it was between the Photon and the Ion. Three connection points provide a solid and secure fit. For an experienced snowboarder, the binding feels foreign. Back in the day, you'd constantly get hassled by lifties and ski patrollers to make sure you were wearing a leash. So comparatively small amount of time really. Which, depending on how much they catch on, may be a good or bad thing. And "you spend ages clearing them out right? They felt a very similar comfort level to the Malavitas. This sugary snow, didn't jam the binding. It's time to ditch the straps! It has a spongey response when pushing hard into the boot. I found them to be faster and more responsive than a regular binding. Unlike ordinary boots these have 3 fixing points that connect to the Step On bindings. Nylon composite material blended with 30% short-glass provides playful response.
