She's the most successful out of her entire group of friends, and she's ready to flaunt her though her "friend group, " known on campus as the East House Seven, doesn't really exist anymore. I quickly attached myself to the characters and their personalities (Frankie was a favorite of mine!! ) Heather comes from a rich family and by one way or another manages to get all that she needs with little effort. This was a beautifully written, fast paced thriller that had me hooked from beginning to end. Overall, I plowed through this one pretty quickly and even though the characters are unlikable, I was still curious to know the ultimate outcome and enjoyed this twisted college reunion. The only element that I didn't love about this book was the number of characters because I could not keep track of them. The ten-year reunion for the class of 2009 at Duquette University is the setting for a group of five formerly close friends (who used to be a group of seven) to reconnect, and though it was not originally part of their reunion plans, they will also be working to solve a cold case murder. Author Ashley Winstead has crafted a masterful novel where each character has an agenda and a secret, and they all overlapped in a way that ended in a murder. Characterisation: This book has many complex characters with their own back stories, hidden agendas, emotional profiles etc.

No spoilers, of course, but once the author reveals the true reasoning behind why Jess and her friends have been called back to Duquette and who exactly has brought them together, the tension and intrigue pick up in a big way, giving readers a mystery to solve alongside the story's sustained interpersonal drama. One of my most anticipated books of the year and it exceeded my expectations! That said, this novel is still quite effective, if not as original as I would have hoped. Now, Jessica is planning what is supposed to be her triumphant return to Duquette for her college reunion—an opportunity for her to prove to her college classmates once and for all that she has achieved the kind of success and status she always dreamed of. For heaven's sake, there are millions of choices for names out there, why oh why name characters with nearly the same names?
Ashley Winstead's immersive debut suspense novel IN MY DREAMS I HOLD A KNIFE weaves an engrossing tale of murder, love, and obsession set against the backdrop of an elite southern university. The characters were especially not well-drawn. Hannah S, Librarian. I was kept on the edge of my toes the entire time and the ending came together so smoothly with an addictive twist and finale. The case was never solved, though a cloud of suspicion still hangs over one of the other group members. She's ready, down to the envious whispers that are sure to follow in her wake. Other than that Great storyline with diverse characters. Also, Courtney being frenemies with them was so confusing.
I loved how each character had their own secrets that somehow all played into their friend's death. In My Dreams I Hold a Knife is a quick, engaging, ideal for fall, suspense story. As the book progresses, the author's expert ability to dole out subtle clues and craft convincing red herrings will keep readers fully invested; this is one of those books where everyone has a dark side and seems like they might just be capable of murder. She follows that up with a back and forth narrative (now and then) to reveal the main characters, a group of friends known as the East House 7. But what those on the outside don't see is the narcissism, ambition, jealousy, desire, and rage. Twists that literally made me ✅. Genre: Mystery/Thriller. Jack was undeniably good, so easy to read. When I wasn't reading this book, I was thinking about it, and felt equally invested in the character back stories and daily interactions as I was in Heather's death. She's put her life back together since her best friend, Heather was murdered and Jack, one of the East House Seven was accused of the crime. I am so glad I got myself a copy of this and will absolutely be recommending this one to anyone who has not yet read it. As the weekend unfolds and they get closer to the truth, the group finds there was more than murder hidden amongst them on campus. I loved how it moved back and forth between the past and the present – just the way it dropped hints as to what had happened keeps you glued to the pages as you desperately try to work out who the murderer is. What would she risk to ensure a prominent and financially secure future? Right from the beginning, I was transported back to my university days and friendships.
Once there she and her other surviving friends are cornered by the dead girl's brother who is determined to get justice. The character development was superb, as I found myself loving as well as loathing several characters. The group called themselves "the seven, " but by the reunion, Courtney had snuck her way in there, much to the annoyance of Jessica. I absolutely loved all of the characters in this book.
Winstead keeps the reader guessing until the very end. On the one hand, this is a seriously convoluted story with lots of drama. This is reminiscent of another book I read recently, Girls of Storm and Shadow by Natasha Ngan (though that's really their only similarity). There is a love triangle in this novel between Jessica, Mint, and Coop. But ten years after the murder of one of the East House Seven, the unbreakable bonds may be hiding fractured secrets of a group bound not by loyalty but by fear. Nothing as it seems. They all have their flaws and unsavory characteristics, but their realness was spot on. Once the characters began working to solve the mystery, I enjoyed this book very much. The tension rises as Eric refuses to let the group leave until the truth is uncovered. The past fills us in on the present cast and we get a good feel for what has shaped them and who they really are. Dark academia setting....
However, some didn't feel realistic and others went a little too far. No cost is too great, and, as readers will discover, Jess is plunged into some very dark depths indeed in pursuit of her goals.
