We love My Father's World because it is very hands on and heavily literature based. A few weeks ago she told me she is bagging SL because there is TOO much to do and she feels pressured to do it all. They have designed the curriculum to easily combine students from 2nd-8th grade. Finally, this is the homeschool curriculum we had the most fun with, by far.
Ultimately, its moms decision, not mine. And which books I actually wanted to read anyway. How does My Father's World compare to Abeka? We ultimately used P4/5, A, and P3/4 (with the next child). Every book is schedule to the paragraph that you read. Which do you like better? My Father's World does update their material but works hard to make sure you can still use their materials by sending you new schedules and making sure student sheets correspond. Due to the elimination of the basic and deluxe package options, I have found less implied flexibility built into MFW.
THey give you so much to choose from that it is overwhelming- of course their suggestions are all so good that it is hard to leave anything out. Which one will give them a better Bible study? I am debating between My Fathers world and Heart of Dakota. Then, you hear other people chime in saying things like I used such and such and never got it all done anyway. I've said this on the board before and hope it doesn't get old, but my dd cried when we finished ADV because it was such a great year.
And 2 younger children under my feet including the special needs stuff. I often (still) purchase books from them. Also 2nd half of K and 1st for 6 year old. Sonlight offers a Mix and Match Program, which is more complicated, but also much more flexible. The next year we switched to MFW and loved it. Those are just a couple of examples of things we did; there is plenty to keep little hands busy and to reinforce learning. My children have learned so much about the Bible in an effortless way.

While studying "K" in kindergarten, we integrated science & art by making Kangaroo pouches, Bible with biblical truth that "God keeps us safe", and literature with story books in the book basket about Kangaroos. While studying "Tundras", your older children may retain the characteristics of a tundra ecosystem, while your younger children learn about a pandas bear's camouflage. I might not be qualified to answer this, since I haven't used either, yet, but I have recently spent a number of hours reading forums and reviews on both and comparing both. For each level, two package choices are available: basic and deluxe. I had originally went with MFW over Sonlight because it was way cheaper, but for High School it didn't make sense to pay so much for items we were not going to use. I want to make sure the kids have a good solid history base but 60 to 90 minutes of history READING each day is a lot more than I was willing to do with more than one child. My Father's World had always been a blend of Charlotte Mason influences in K-8th, with some traditional and classical work mixed in. The TM is extremely user friendly. Why I prefer MFW (in random thought order): * It's a Bible-centered curriculum.
My Father's World is closely related to Unit Studies because so many subjects relate back to one another, especially in kindergarten and family cycle. However I identified with a number of items on their list of "Reasons NOT to use Sonlight":giggle Obviously, tons of people love SL & it works for their families. The ones in MFW are simple, doable, inexpensive, but fun & effective. To give appropriate work for different ages on the same subject gave me a headache! You just need to decide which is the best fit for YOUR family.
You have a variety depending on the year and such. Im worried about the early years of the family cycle being too mature for younger ages – not age-appropriate. They cover the equivalent of two Apologia science books a year, while many homeschooling families consider one to be adequate. Your little one can listen to books about China, make paper lanterns, and eat fried rice with everyone; while your older child works on their student notebook pages during the toddler's nap time. I wanted something that would push him to further development in that area and with Sonlight I could order the more advanced LA package. My Father's World can be considered a "boxed curriculum", meaning that you can use it as a one stop shop for every subject, or you can buy one piece at a time. The Lord will lead you, He is faithful! MFW felt disjointed and I didn't care for the fact I had to keep flipping back to the calendar to make sure I didn't miss anything. Although my kids are a little too far apart to enjoy this, many families enjoy buying on year of MFW and being able to use it for multiple children. They all have pros and cons. In addition to a lot of reading, there's worksheets, and hands on stuff as well. The book basket contains a large list of books ranging from picture books to chapter books. So, could you ladies fill me in? Perhaps you love the idea of reading great literature aloud while your children gather round or you know that it is easier to relate to people of historical times with historical fiction than simply dates. I run a home business with my husband and have to divide my days between school and work. My Father's World ramps up the student's work as they get older. My son loves reading with me and begs me to do more then one days lesson in a day. 2015/16: ECC (2nd time around w/ 3rd, 6th and 8. DD 8 yrs homeschool; Junior in PS. For High School it is actually more budget friendly for us to do Sonlight, which is what we are doing.
It's a little harder to combine in that program but not impossible. My Father's World no longer has basic packages, which was extremely disappointing.
I loved the choice of books in that program. I'm okay sharing negative things with my children if there is a redemptive quality to it or because that is the truth in this world and our hope is ultimately Jesus. Nature walks & nature journals are encouraged. Homeschooling ds 11 & dd 8 using RtR. Bilingual homeschool. Family style learning. In second grade, we studied how yeast works in science as we studied Jesus was The Bread of Life in Bible. I had 2 in the family cycle and 1 in Kindergarten. We never finished a core. We can read through them as fast or slow as we want. When we home schooled we used Sonlight - I like the lit biased approach - I will say that I did not like some of the books - they were dated and some were just not historically accurate - so I found a good substitution, or used them and had a lesson on why they were off. Fiar the art comes from a specific story you are doing all week, and in mfw, the art is a separate book.
I was also having an increasingly difficult time to figure out how to combine my children in a Sonlight core. I stay on track by following the well thought out sequence, but I need to have flexibility to not do every little thing listed in my manual. GREAT books - best book lists out there. MFW 1st, Adventures, ECC, CTG, RTR, Exp-1850. We all love the hands on "kid-friendly" approach! Do not have access to a library. All you need to add (in most sets) is Language Arts and Math (they offer their own to add on, or you can purchase whatever brand you want separately. But if your child likes hands on activities, and you want to be a "relaxed homeschooler, " MFW is the way to go. Last year was a struggle with my younger dc but this year has been wonderful. I used FIAR with my oldest for her Kindy and 1st year. I was completely new to the homeschool world, and a boxed curriculum seemed the least scary to me. I think MFW does a better job of incorporating all 3 learning styles. It is listed by week and has hundreds of ideas of books to had for enrichment.
