By the end, I was embarrassingly crawling down from my pedestal of pre-conceived judgement. Be sure not to skip that one. Some of the book gave me a "Dead to Me" vibe, which is one of my favorite TV shows so I definitely have no complaints about that. "Oh, I know what you're saying, " she booms, rolling her eyes and glancing around the room. I did think that Daniel's involvement was was inevitable but had not really considered Selena until the business about the drugs came up. I suppose I just lost control. I look over her shoulder, try to catch the eye of one of the other women. I hope you know I never meant for things to end the way they did. Greenwich Park by Katherine Faulkner, due for publication by Simon & Schuster (Gallery Books) on January 4, 2022, is available now for pre-orders. I also feel like Helen, the main character, is not as oblivious and naive as people think she is. When the police arrive at Helen's doorstep, we receive our first in-text confirmation that things with Rachel, though always somewhat mysterious, have indeed taken a turn for the grim. How does Katie's impactful career accomplishment affect the way she feels about what unfolds with Rachel? Read an excerpt from Greenwich Park, this winter's twistiest debut thriller.
I was completely drawn into this book from the very start. Early in Greenwich Park, Katie, who works as a reporter, cinches an exclusive interview with the survivor of a closing sexual assault case just as the threads in the relationships between Rachel, Helen, and Helen's family begin to twist. The novel is narrated in the main by insecure Helen who is desperate to be best friends with sister-in-law Serena, and when she is signed off work early due to high blood pressure, pretty lonely. We later learn that Rachel has her own dark history, and that she offers more to Helen than Helen realizes. I chose to read a free ARC of Greenwich Park but that has in no way influenced my review. A murmur of relief goes up.
This information about Greenwich Park was first featured. Helen is an interesting character if not a little needy and naïve in her approach to life. I am very aware now of the gaze of the other women in the room, looking from me to the girl and the wine, and back. Serena is the perfect sister-in-law. Set in the desirable and posh neighborhood of Greenwich Park, this domestic thriller delves into the (very dark, very sinister) secrets that people whose lives we all could so easily envy are keeping. Is told from many points of view and the truth arises from those varying perspectives. The writing, however, was only okay, in my opinion. Message 13: Jun 20, 2022 04:38PM. Text-to-Speech: Enabled. Or is it someone else?
Group Read - Greenwich Park. "Greenwich Park" is aptly named, reflecting both the novel's elitist backdrop and one of its most potent symbols. Discuss if a breaking point was inevitable in the lives of Helen and her family. Never mind, you can team up with me, can't you? " What did you do that day, after I was convicted? She switches rapidly between concurrent story lines told from the eyes of Helen, her sister-in-law Serena, and her friend Katie. Katherine Faulkner's writing is strong in this debut novel that has already earned deserving comparisons to Paula Hawkins's The Girl On The Train, with perhaps even more insight into the psyche of damaged women and what it takes to heal. Carol/Bonadie wrote: "Beware, this post covers the entire book! Of all the crime fiction subgenres out there, domestic suspense is the one that I've become most particular about over my years blogging. She books places at a local ante-natal class which is being held upstairs at a local pub, for her, Daniel, Serena (who is also pregnant) and Rory, but Daniel gets held up at work and Serena sends a last minute text crying off. For Rachel knows something that could turn Helen's perfectly conventional world upside down. There was a problem filtering reviews right now.
Can't wait to read more by this author. It just made no sense. Helen signs herself, Serena, and their spouses up for birthing classes. She brings the glass to her lips. Daniel, her architect husband, adores her, they live in a beautiful house in exclusive Greenwich Park and they're expecting their first baby after years of tragedy. The writing is razor-sharp, the characters deliciously problematic, and the ending utterly gasp-worthy. I'm not usually very good at figuring out mysteries but I had this book figured out pretty early on. Thanks to NetGalley for the the early review copy of Greenwich Park by Katherine Faulkner. Greenwich Park works so well as a novel because it manages to balance a fast paced and deliciously unpredictable plot with brilliantly in-depth and engaging characters. But when my eyes caught on the blue check of your coat, and I saw that you were staring at the floor, I knew then, as sure as the sound of a door slamming shut—there was no way back. I did enjoy the 3-person point of view this story was told in. And then you have the blurb which intrigues the reader, piquing your interest to the point where you have to find out more.
Katie is also on-off dating Helen's other brother Charlie, who is generally considered a somewhat less driven individual. Rachel seems to cling to Helen, cutting her off from the other parents to be at the class. Helen, Daniel, Serena and Rory have been hanging out together for years. I had just read a book with a similar setup though quite different where a new acquaintance was not what she seemed, so initially I groaned at the concept. It is easy to lose sight of the drama that this exposition is meant to set up, and Faulkner risks losing the attention of some readers. While many thrillers are set in early motherhood, Katherine Faulkner brilliantly explores the anxious weeks before the baby is born, when the tension is as high as our hopes. The book is on the longer side for a suspense novel of this type I felt and the plot is very slowly unraveled. However, things quickly turn uncomfortable. And I suppose the real answer is it started years before you could have ever imagined it did.
Almost from the moment Faulkner introduces Rachel, a shady character, the suspense and a sense of dread start to build as the reader senses there is something horrific in the offing even though we can't predict what it might be. I also really liked the setting of Greenwich Park and Faulkner's descriptions of sights, smells, scenery, even tastes, she is great at providing those visual aspects. I find it difficult sometimes to believe I am really here. We'd been planning to do the classes together, as a foursome, but... Not that I advocate for anyone being brutalized but I mean, we see how she conducts herself! When a distraught Rachel turns up at Helen's house with a suitcase and seems intent on staying, despite no shortage of ready money, it introduces extra tension to a household counting down the weeks until the birth.. My heart sank when I realised that this was yet another psychological thriller that begins with a new friend appearing out of nowhere, popping up everywhere and ultimately becoming a cuckoo in the nest. If there is one thing guaranteed to get me to pick up a novel, it's one where motherhood and parenting is involved. ISBN-13: 978-1982150310.
How does your judge and jury rule? The money seems like it should have been enough as far as the blackmail goes! Split your reading group into four small teams: the first devises a short scenario lasting a few minutes, complete with a beginning, middle, and end, to perform for the other three to watch. Who just wants to get know Helen and her friends and her family. Unfortunately for her, Rachel doesn't really do boundaries and the lines between what is acceptable and not become increasingly blurred. 'A fantastically addictive read' ABIGAIL DEAN. I was very intrigued in the beginning. For example, there is an elderly neighbour who has never had children who "looked blank whenever I said anything about my pregnancy" which, to be honest, got my back up. It is such a lazy generalisation (and dare I say it, a little smug) to imply that not having children renders you mute around the subject. I think I read so many of them that I burned myself out on them, so I try to choose ones with interesting or unique concepts -- and this certainly delivered. But that's not the case. The temptation of a sealed envelope.
You'll remember this thriller long after the final page. " The story grips quickly, and the suspense builds and builds. Helen's deep desire to build a perfect life for her, her husband, and her baby makes her highly endearing to the reader. And when Helen meets Rachel, the reader will quickly begin to fear that Helen might never see that dream come true.
