Much of the criticism is valid - the story does centre the experiences of Sam, the cisgendered younger brother of Jessica, and her parents rather than the experiences of Jessica herself however it does not validate their pain; instead these characters realise their difficulties are really irrelevant and that it is Jessica's experience that matters. Edit: After a discussion, I have removed my rating of this book, leaving only my comment. The book's only saving grace was the character of Aunt Rose, who welcomed and fully accepted Jessica without question, and who helped Sam to understand what was going on.

That once Sam had accepted Jessica, we only got one brief chapter summarising the family's new life, was incredibly frustrating – making it seem as though everything wrong with the Waver family was fixed by Sam shouting "my brother's name is Jessica! The reason being, I assume, the author's not trans and knows he's not and while he's probably able to empathise because he seems in general like a pretty empathetic guy, doesn't feel that he would be able to accurately portray someone trans in first person. Cis people would sure say so. This book received harsh criticism, some of which was just for the title and by people who said themselves they haven't even read it, saying it is transphobic.
I don't have to read it. I don't think it demeans trans people for someone (gay male, cis) to write a novel with a narrator who is a pubescent brother of someone who is beginning transition. This is a book by a cis person pretending to be a younger cis person. Jessica's family is also a problem to me – her parents especially. I don't have to read this book to feel the heartbreak I know will go with it. It's not the best if books I've read in this subject matter but it does hit home some important factors when parents are confronted with the fact that their son is indeed their daughter from now on. I wasn't sure whether or not to review it, how I would go about reviewing it if I chose to, how would I write this without potentially offending someone etc. First off, we have the title. EDIT: MOST NON- TRANS, HET CHARACTERS SUCKED IN THE BOOK. I am grateful that there are storylines covering important issues like gender and sexuality but I feel that the author could have maybe researched the experiences of more gender diverse people to get a true idea of what their experiences are and how it feels to be misgendered or 'dead named' (referred to in their given name). With a mother running for prime minister and a brother being the best footballer in the school you would think he would be popular. It would've been interesting to have seen a conversation between Jessica and someone she truly trusted, and I think it was a shame that Sam wasn't that person for her.

And sure, we can say it would incentivize sales, or help sanitize the book for cis readers, and my response is simple. There were several people on goodreads who claimed to have NOT read the fucking book yet they rated the book one star as the book was "transphobic". In many ways, Sam's viewpoint is authentic - his confusion, anger and inability to comprehend his brother's metamorphosis. I also found the insistence on calling the trans character not just 'Jason', but 'my brother Jason' over-egged.
