In The Taking of Annie Thorne Tudor's writing seems more self-assured and honed. ''TERRIFIC IN EVERY WAY'' LEE CHILD. A village haunted by its past and its present. Beth Scattergood teaches art at Arnhill. They are both only small things and trivial to the story in The Taking of Annie Thorne. However, I read this book a lot quicker than I had been managing other books of similar length. Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an arc of this book. As the book goes on, the reader learns about Joe's little sister Annie, who disappeared, then came back different. Tudor burst onto the scene early in 2018 with her much-lauded debut The Chalk Man.
Joe has come back to make this end. The characters are brilliant and the setting is really good too. He was on the outskirts, an outcast who preferred comic books and video games to sports and spent large amounts of time with Annie, his younger sister. Joe turns out to be a character with varying shades of grey when it comes to morality. As the main character, Joe isn't the most likeable sort, he's not a hero, he isn't a good guy either nor is he a bad guy, He's just a guy, an 'average Joe' if you will. Will be buying a copy to read again. Another creepy offering from this author. The Taking of Annie Thorne is told in a dual timeline; we learn the history of the characters and what happened in the past, and we see some of those same characters back as adults. I was drawn into the story immediately.
It's really well written, and I can't wait for the next book by this author. I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Have I been too gushing in my praise for a favourite author? The Taking of Annie Thorne more than delivers on the promise of The Chalk Man and cements C. Tudor's reputation as one of the finest young genre writers of her generation. You can't see yourself in their shoes. Can he unearth the truth and importantly can he survive it? Little here can be trusted.
Having read The Chalk Man and very much enjoyed it, I snapped up the chance to read C. Tudor's second novel. The above is my own opinion. I now need to read this author's previous book, as this one was so good and the 'Chalkman' received such rave reviews. If you like Tana French, you will love, love, love C. Tudor. " You have dibs on that dungeon for the rest of your life. It was a highly entertaining and gripping read. I actually finished it at half 2 in the morning because I couldn't sleep until I knew how it ended. The Taking of Annie Thorne is described as 'the spine-tingling new thriller to keep you up all night' and I would have to agree. Literally kept me on the edge of my seat until I'd finished it. The setting, Arnhill, formerly a mining town, brought low by the pit closure. I read this book just over a year ago, so it's well due its five minutes of fame on my blog. I just didn't want to put it down.

But, it is that added attention to detail on the part of Tudor and the feeling that you get as a reader from them and the book on a whole that makes you realise that you are reading something extra special. It's a very claustrophobic atmosphere and C. J Tudor nailed that perfectly. Also the story is full of cliches. In terms of criticisms.
Because judging by what was done to that poor Morton kid, what happened all those years ago to Joe's sister is happening again. After reading and thoroughly enjoying this author's first book I was really looking forward to this one and I wasn't disappointed! Dolls, creepy kids and horror, equals heebie jeebies!! I think this is better than The Chalk Man, in that the characters were all fab, including psycho Gloria! Added by 192 members.
Without doubt this brought two King classics to mind – but I can't tell you which because therein lies the land of spoilers. In the present, Joe returns to Arnhill to lay the ghosts of the past to rest and finally confront the truth about what happened to Annie twenty-five-years ago. 'I know what happened to your sister. She wasn't the same not the fun loving Little Annie that he loved, she was a stranger someone he didn't know the sister he once loved he was now scared to death off! As usual, there are plot twists throughout the story and unlike those in The Chalk Man, the plot twists here managed to catch me by surprise.
