In 1979 the art director of the off-off Broadway WPA theatre, lyricist, and playwright Howard Ashman teamed up with budding composer Alan Menken, who was working as a commercial jingle writer and songwriter in local New York City clubs. Sales have ended for this event. However in spite of (or possibly partially because of) the show's humble beginnings, Little Shop of Horrors became a big hit nearly overnight once it premiered May 6, 1982. An instant hit at the Madison Square Garden's Paramount Theatre, the show has become a perennial New York holiday event. When asked why she decided to recreate her performance for our Diva Talk interview, she said that it was "mostly for my dearest Howard [Ashman] to live again.
