I loved all the mentions of coastal marine life, the descriptions of tide pools, all the details this book gave me about buildings and dresses and shoes and accessories. I finished it in three days (pretty quick for me), and thought it was an elegant and haunting story with memorable images and twists. House of Salt and Sorrows is the book version of that. House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig is haunting, captivating and intriguing. I actually read it in 2019 but I finally had the time to sit down and bang out a review. In the end, the Thaumas sisters build a cottage by the sea, Camille at the helm.
Overall thoughts: This book is the kind of dark fantasy retelling that I didn't know I needed. It's just so pretty. For anyone looking for the perfect blend of fairytale and horror, I'd definitely recommend the mysteriously attractive House of Salt and Sorrows. To make matters worse, Annaleigh and her sisters seem to be seeing the ghosts of her dearly departed sisters lingering around the house and adding to the terror and sorrow the family is suffering from. They kiss and plan to figure out the mystery. Buddy read with For Love Of A Book.
Annaleigh doesn't show a lot of emotions to those around her including her family throughout House of Salt and Sorrows. ENDING: The part about the villain's identity was foreseeable but last twists about delusions were clearly mind-bending, brain cell burning, head thudding kind of experiences they had to endure for finishing this book. There is something I find unappealing about the idea of someone being cursed and they acknowledging that and making it sound like a fabulous tragedy ("Oh, yes! And go from well-read to best read with book recs, deals and more in your inbox every week. And that's when the dancing begins. ↬ Unpredictable but bland characters. A forsaken, haunted place is what the people on the mainland call the island, and a dark and hopeless mood has spread among the family. "You mean when you remember her?
It's eerie, dark, detailed, and promised a waterlogged story set by the ocean. If you still want to read it then, honestly it's like doing heroine after everyone told you it was the worst drug. I love Annaleigh and Cassius' slow-burn, passionate, tender, devoted, growing love story. Till the fair and gentle Eulalie became my blushing bride". But House of Salt and Sorrows fits perfectly in the middle where it has enough that the reader knows it's a twelve dancing princess retelling, but it's also unique. I got major Laurie vibes from Fisher.
In Chapters 17 – 24, the Thaumas girls dance at secret balls for a week straight, wearing out their shoes. It's there I guess I would have sworn that writing used to be the priority of books. The new clothing and fairy shoes are not the only new girls also become aware of a secret passage. And always willing to help. I am glad the two ultimately had a happy ending because I want the best for my literary friends but I wish more work had been put into their relationship. It's so minimalist that I couldn't see it. Annaleigh said that her father was nice and never violent right at the beginning of the story.
The writing is also quite lyrical, which adds to the ambiance of the whole book. XD I still had a lot of fun reading this book and in the end that's everything that counts. But, it is far from tragic. A love triangle-- oops, scrap that last one. I loved the concept behind all the different islands and the gods and the religions. The most recent to die, Eulalie, plunged to her death from a high cliff to the sea. As it is, they're stuck with her, but at least they get new shoes out of it. Trope, which is cheap and I hate it, especially when the answer is so obvious and when the book constantly approached even only the possibility of mental illness in really insensitive ways. This book had so many promising elements but it was A MESS. Every time I tried to read some more, my mind would wander off, and I'd catch myself daydreaming about something else. Annaleigh Thaumas was such a kind person and I loved that all the love interests were drawn to her because of that trait rather than her appearance.
There was one night, I was up late, reading this on my kindle with all the lights turned off, I got to a section where there is a particularly lucid scene involving one of Annaleigh's dead sisters and I legit almost put that bitch in the freezer! It was all so atmospheric and enchanting. All in all, this was a strong debut novel. I didn't know how to feel about Cassius. How come no one told me this would be so creepy?!? "Thank you, " I murmured, finding my voice. Get ready to be swept away. " With the support of an "alluring stranger" and her childhood friend, Annaleigh sets out to solve the curse before her life is claimed next.
I thought he wanted to eliminate all the older sisters until Annaleigh was the oldest so that he could marry her AND have the estate. When an old friend and a new love interest are invited to the manor, Annaleigh's haunted dreams become darker and stronger. Overall, this one delivered, and I'm intrigued to see more from Erin A. Craig in the future. But unfortunately the way it was resolved was just weirdly boring and over the top at the same time. The author writing this: "alright how about, uh, [spins wheel] a gothic twist on [pulls a straw] the twelve dancing princesses... [throws dart at board] with a seaside setting [throws another dart] filled with GOds and dEmOns!!! The writing in here is decent and the author is capable of setting the mood well when she so chooses. I was drawn to this cover from the beginning and knew I had to read it.
Think about the least appealing thing in the world, wherever it's your dad naked, I don't care, but yeah, that's exactly the romance in the book. If anyone is set to watch over them—and many a king's son tries to do so, on the promise of the usual reward—he falls asleep, and in the morning his head is struck off without mercy, and without concern from the (one has to say) rather callous princesses. Truth be told, a lot of this story creeped me the heck out. But that was about it.
Annaleigh is shocked but overjoyed, and the pair share a kiss. But overall, a solid spooky story. Annaleigh and Cassius return. Possibly because the original fairytale had a prince coming to rescue the princesses from their nightly dancing fates. I will definitely be keeping this writer on my radar, she is a fabulous storyteller. So yeah, I really would have wanted more interactions between them both before they fell head over heels. This book follows Annaleigh Thaumas, the sixth-born of twelve sisters, as she deals with the mystery of her sister's death—the fourth death in the family.
Morella - Their very young step-mother (only been married for about 4 months). It was ridiculous, but I couldn't shake the look of fear in Verity's eyes. I'm sorry, but you can't all be the #1 best-selling YA book, especially not if you're all doubling down on the BLANK of BLANK AND BLANK forgettable title game. On the surface, it looks wildly similar to the original tale of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, but on a deeper level this book has its own appeal that makes it all the more remarkable in its own right. The festival is important to the People of the Salt, and Morella is extremely grateful. In Pelage, Annaleigh dances with a man with a three-headed dragon on his suit. Rosalie reminded me Amy and Verity had a little Beth, a little Amy inside. I've to admit that due to that their relationship felt kind of insta-lovey, though.
The latest case was Eulalie. A whole bunch of other stuff happened, too, but I skimmed the middle of this book pretty heavily because I wasn't really amused by the sad descriptions of the heroines lackluster attempts at Nancy Drewing. I also thoroughly enjoyed the writing. I enjoyed following the story from her perspective and I also really liked her relationship with her older sister Camilla. In the midst of Annaleigh's quest to find her sisters' murderer, another plot is bubbling. The plot itself just.... was hiding. We have the mystery, the haunted house, the ghosts, the vivid and terrorizing visions, the family curse and dynamic, the star-crossed lovers type of romance, the magical door and dancing shoes, the bizarre deaths, and yeah, you get me. This book threw me a curve, and I was left in a fumble. First of all, I really enjoyed the atmosphere the author created here. DoorDash: 50% off + free delivery on any order with DoorDash promo code.
