When he returns, he meets up with people from his past and encounters their children whilst working at the school. Tie these Five people together tying them in multiple knots till they choke begging to break free of the past!! This book really unnerved me at times, but I could not put it down and it was a really fantastic book. Last year's debut novel by The Chalk Man was such a memorable, creepy and menacing read, combining mystery with horror, a winning combination in my eyes. His gambling addiction led him into depts. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style of this book, I think all the twists and turns were in the right places, and it was a true page turner for me. 02 Sakena: Mr. Telephone Man. Joe grew up in Arnhill, he went to the school, he had his gang of mates, and he had a sister. It's difficult not to talk about C. Tudor's work without mentioning the obvious influence that Stephen King has on her work. Initially it is very unclear and only unfolds throughout the course of the novel. "Sometimes Dead is better…". There was no point of this book that left me completely satisfied, and I was sorry that it didn't carry on the way that it seemed to be going at the beginning. Praise for C. Tudor... My only issue with The Taking of Annie Thorne is that it feels a bit too derivative of one of King's books, which actually weakens the story. Anyway, long story short. Tudor is a fierce talent: a writer who blurs genre lines, pushes the envelope, and delivers stories as smart as they are creepy. Claire E Rider; Neil McDonald; Alison Weir. The Taking of Annie Thorne pays homage to King's Pet Sematary (although readers will be pleased to hear that no cats were harmed in the making of this novel), replacing the Indian tribe with an ancient druidic civilisation and transplanting the horror to the English Midlands. C. J. Tudor was born in Salisbury and grew up in Nottingham, and has recently moved to Kent with her partner and young daughter. Joe and his friends made a discovery there in their teenage years and although more stringent measures have since been put in place the teenagers of Arnhill are still finding hidden mysterious tunnels into the darkness. I didn't think I was going to like the main character in the story Joe, as he seemed not a particularly nice person, and if I am honest I am still not sure I liked him as a person but as a character in the story he was brilliant. And then she came back.
The opening prologue is extremely grim and bleak as two police officers investigate a crime scene, setting the tone for the entire novel. This was hugely atmospheric, I think more so because I grew up in a village much like Arnhill and actually don't live too far away from Nottingham where the fictional village of Arnhill is placed. Up to this point, life for the Thorne family, had it's ups and downs and for Joe his school days were an unhappy period in his young life. Bringing all these together, CJ Tudor has done it again folks, with another striking cover and a tale that is guaranteed to disturb and to rattle your thoughts. Literally kept me on the edge of my seat until I'd finished it. This was staggeringly good. I like Joe for different reasons. ''TERRIFIC IN EVERY WAY'' LEE CHILD. This book was amazing it started slowly but then it took off and I found myself unable to put it down. I have not read a horror novel before, unwilling to suspend my disbelief of what I can't touch or logically explain, so I didn't know what to expect. As an adult, Joe tried to push the past behind him but he knew he couldn't get away forever and with mounting gambling debts hanging over his head and the strange email, Joe knew that it was time to lay the past to rest. After the way things ended with his old gang--the betrayal, the suicide, the murder--and after what happened when his sister went missing, the last thing he wanted to do was return to his hometown. Joe Thorne is returning to his hometown of Arnhill. I liked him from the first page.
She brought a brightness into his world, making his life bearable. It's a great storyline about a teacher, Joe Thorne, who returns to his childhood village where some horrible murders have taken place and where he continues to grapple with his own personal demons, problems and nightmares. Is that a problem – not for me personally but I can't speak for others. I didn't want to admit, even to myself, that sometimes I was scared to death of my own little sister. From page one, the reader is pulled in with a gathering sense of dread, and taken on an addictive, thrilling ride to the very last page. " Joe Thorn's sister Annie went missing when she was eight years old, twenty four hours later she came home but would not say where she had been and was acting strangely. It's creepy, and if you love horror or scary films you'll love this! 'I know what happened to your sister. However, 48 hours later, Annie came back, but different. If you fancy giving this book a go it will be released on 21 February. Have I been too harsh? ''Written with such skill it''s hard to believe this is only her second book.
Oh my goodness - this is a creepy one! After 48 hours she returned but she wasn't the same. One flashback scene, which evoked memories of The Exorcist, was extremely visceral in describing the violent behaviour of the possessed individual. As a whole, this novel was a gripping tale on chasing ghosts. I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed. Sometimes I find writing book reviews challenging. C. J Tudor is a fabulous storyteller and I love how she has a way of bringing the past into the present as she did in Chalk Man.
She did return home but, let's just say, things were never the same. How this is only her second novel is beyond me. Disappeared from her own bed. This is a compelling novel to read, particularly, I think, by lamplight, late into the night. On February 5, 2019. Secondary school feels like how school was, and a small village with a dark secret, feels exactly like that.
Unabridged Audiobook. I had read The Chalk Man by this author and I loved it so I was hoping this book would be as good, I need not have worried and although I was convinced I had worked it all out I hadn't and the ending was brilliant. But as Joe journeyed into his teenage years he gravitated toward a bunch of misfits, a group of teenagers who were up for adventure and trouble, leading Joe down a very dark path indeed. What a fantastic book. It's a place for locals not outsiders, people don't leave and even though Joe was born and raised there, he left and is now deemed as being an 'outsider' by the Arnhill residents. Then, on the other hand, you will want to take your time, savouring each and every page and treasuring the story.
