Tyler Johnson Was Here is a vivid and heartbreaking portrait of grief, loss, and a young black teen navigating his life after it is turned upside down following a fatal act of police brutality. Especially after this is the same person that beat up Marvin, took his chain, and also beat his brother up too. To bring attention to this and to encourage a conversation to provoke change and awareness, I think books like Tyler Johnson Was Here are valuable and important, and I hope they are being read and discussed in classrooms. "— Publishers Weekly.
Hey there, book lover. This is a difficult review to write, and I am slightly conflicted. I whole-heatedly wish him success in telling his story and spreading his message of awareness. Cut from much the same cloth as All American Boys, The Hate U Give, and Dear Martin, Tyler Johnson Was Here brings Black Lives Matter to the forefront of YA once again. She starts out at this mysterious girl Marvin sees at the party. Tyler johnson was here book review guardian. Alyssa L, Bookseller. I think all of this is something that most people, especially young black people will experience and relate to. It's like the police go to the academy just to protect white people and that's bullshit!!! It is shocking and sad and the fact that the plot is based somewhat on the author's real experiences, makes it all the more so. But yeah nope, it just didn't cut it for me. Tyler was such an interesting character, and I wish we got to know him more before he disappeared. "My pops used to warn us about the police.
Marvin grapples with the reality of losing the other half of himself while struggling to get justice for his brother's murder and so many other unarmed teens who are victims of police brutality. It all just felt off and IDK I can't explain it, but just reading it made me so annoyed. This one is told from the perspective of a victim's brother. "— Karen M. McManus, New York Times bestselling author of One of Us Is Lying. And, hell, I couldn't resist a nice chuckle at Marvin talking about "unapologetically masturbating. " If you are still surprised by any of this, you haven't been paying attention, because this has been happening for a while now. Terrified as his mother unravels and mourning a brother who is now a hashtag, Marvin must learn what justice and freedom really mean. The ending was okay, Coles tries to end things on a good note, but by then I was just ready to close this book and move onto something else. He likes "A Different World", he wants to go to MIT (at least at first), and he's a supersmart kid just trying to fit in and survive to get out of the fate that the world sees fit to box him in, particularly with a father in prison and a mother who struggles to make sure her boys don't get taken by the streets. I don't think it rushes past anything, I think the grief is handled as realistically as possible. Tyler johnson was here book review. I am just looking for a book about police brutality that has a POV of the police officer who shot someone because I want to know if it is hate, confusion, racism or if he was afraid, because God knows I don't know what is going through their minds. This well-written, fast-paced story eloquently addresses how to grieve, plan, and participate in the burial of a loved one, a sensitive subject for all youth. This is also an Own Voices novel which makes me DNF'ng it make me feel like a jerk.
After reminding myself that I matter, that I've always mattered, that Tyler mattered and still does, I make a promise to myself. Reading this book was a great experience. The book is incredibly timely with the race relations and political climate happening in the states. "I need your help, " Johntae says slowly. I think there's plenty of room for boys who look like me. Being a woman of color, I also appreciated the microscopic and macroscopic attention this novel gave to its racial conflicts from the eyes of its protagonist. I found myself waiting for that moment for 150 pages when I could have been enjoying the suspense of them not being able to find Tyler. This tackles racism and police brutality, and is an important and powerful read. With his help, Pip digs deeper, unveiling unsavory facts about Andie and the real reason Sal's friends couldn't provide him with an alibi. This family's struggle to find resolve, peace, and even a twinge of justice is full of life lessons, including this gem inspired by Auntie Nicola, a former cop: "Life is about wading in the rain, in all the storm's fury…becoming one and the same with the storm—getting angry, getting heated, and being the change you want. " He used to say get a good look at the cop's face 'cause that makes all the difference. Tyler Johnson Was Here Book Review- On Racism and Police Brutality –. Jay Coles is a voice we need in YA today, and you bet your ass I am going to read this book. That their voices deserve to be heard. This is a story with many heavy layers and attempts to address those layers from the perspective of a geeky teenage boy left confused and distressed by the events around him. Create a free account to discover what your friends think of this book! I still do not get why Marvin's principal was against him going to MIT. Also, Jay is a composer, musician, and missionary where he gets to mentor college students. I liked the characters just fine, but there were times when the characterizations seemed a bit off for me. It was stuff like that kept taking me out of the story. Read it, because it's important, because you want to--don't look to it for comparisons--and that's all. Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles (Book Review) –. 304 pages, Hardcover. The love of family and friends.
But if brief slice-of-life type books are your thing, and even if they're not? Despite not much specific development, each character feels just as true to heart. I understand that his mind was very much occupied by a traumatic event and I could see how much he cared for and appreciated the people in his life. I see that at least some of my friends on Goodreads really enjoyed this book, so maybe you will, too. Not when he's got a debut novel so stark and powerful as this one. Thanks so much to Hachette Book Group Canada for sending me an ARC of this book, as always all opinions are my own. "Hate is too ugly of a thing for some people to acknowledge, but the thing about hate is you can't throw it on someone else without getting a little bit on yourself. " A situation would happen, you would read about it for a couple pages and then just as quickly, it would be over and we'd have moved onto the next situation that was normally set days or weeks after.
They've seen officers lift firearms at children, slam them to the ground, and verbally abuse them, with no consequences. Strong story of the aftermath of police violence in communities of color. Ivy, G-mo and Marvin's friendship is beautiful, they are supportive and caring and I love reading about the three of them. The best parts of the book, for me, are the little things in life for which Marvin shows such appreciation.
The ending of this book is beautiful, and I loved that they got to the point where they could let go enough to release Tyler's ashes. This book takes place in Alabama, but it doesn't feel real to me. Or they could have just stayed friends. Speaking of weirdness with Marvin, there is also a scene where we have Marvin eating guacamole for the first time, I even went wait there's no Chipotle there? She breaks when Tyler's body is discovered, and you really hope that she doesn't remain broken throughout because Marvin needs her as much as she needs him. I felt like I slogged through a longer-than-necessary fanfic of The Hate U Give without ever being engaged in the story.
If you want to engage with this topic through fiction some more, here are a couple books I have read and can recommend (as I am sure there are many more that I have not yet read that are really great): Having said all that, I also encourage you to check out some non-fiction books.
