Replacing the cat is a waste of time until the original failure mode is fixed. Smog checks verify that a vehicle's emissions system is working properly and the vehicle is not pushing pollutants into the air. FWIW, my car without a cat easily passes tail pipe emissions.

It's easier to replace the downstream one with the cat/midpipe out of the car anyway. I don't care what you say, my anecdotal evidence agrees with my reality. There's a non-OEM version made by Eastern Catalytic that's much cheaper than OEM. Then drive another 50 to100 miles. 15 and we were good for another year. I have the federal model. If this particular warning light is on you will need to the get the vehicle inspected and repaired before taking it in for a smog test. The oxygen sensor monitors the gas/air mixture being sent into the fuel injectors so the mixture can be adjusted if it is running rich or lean. If I can get some decent parts for the $ while doing this repair, all the better. If you take the time to make sure your vehicle is prepared for an emissions test, you won't have to deal with the anxiety and potential embarrassment - not to mention the inconvenience - of failing the test.
