"Thirteen" (however perfectly decent the melody might be) is a good symbol of the main problem I have with most Big Star songs, namely that the lyrics, while superficially giving a survey of what it's like to be a young person with whatever problems, end up sounding like they were written by people whose only experience with being a young person with problems and hopes was through sitcoms and mediocre 'coming of age" movies. As I'm not reviewing those records, let me fast forward to when I finally got around to "getting" "Third/Sister Lovers. 5 to Part 746 under the Federal Register. Two cute musical references to note: The intro guitar lick to "Best Chance We've Ever Had" is pulled from The Beatles' "You Won't See Me, " and the first lyric is "Wait!, " the title of another Beatles song on the same record. Grace to be influenced by the best! Writer/s: Alex Chilton / Chris Bell. Only a few of the songs (the wonderful dark-to-light ballad "Lady Sweet, " cheery bubblegum "Turn My Back On The Sun, " and melancholy minor-key "Hung Up With Summer" -- the former two of which were apparently written by the NEW band members and not Alex at all! ) Only "Watch the Sunrise" stands out because of it's beauty and it's slightly faster tempo. Say - Alex Chilton has a bee-u-ti-fle.
Eh, I've always found Big Star pretty overrated. Much better, of course, is "The Ballad of El Goodo, " where the band does a nearly perfect Byrds homage in the choral vocals but gives the song their own flavor through things like the slightly phased guitar bits and the unexpected "Hold on, hold on... " twist in the middle. I would think not at all. They could have picked a thousand better known songs from the era, but to their credit they didn't pick something obvious and predictable, and it's a jem! Hasn't everybody realized yet that the Velvet Underground were never any good at all, even a little bit? "#1 Record", while good, isn't one of my favorites.
Follow 11, 873 followers. After years and years of hearing the hype of this band I expected nothing short of a full album of terrific rock songs and innovative recording techniques. The tune perfectly evokes long, lazy summers lounging around (perhaps in a buddy's basement), with no money, no plans, and not a thing to do but talk to you. "Downs" features a basketball for a snare drum, and the two dirge-like ballads "Kanga Roo" and "Holocaust" (my favorite Big Star song ever) are just plain spooky. Knowing that this is the last new material the band could ever produce (Chilton died a few years later, and Stephens stopped touring the band as Big Star around that time) gives it at least some heft, too. Say - Alex Chilton has a bee-u-ti-fle voicebox, which you'd never guess judging from the hoarse, gruff approach he used for the Box Tops way back in the '10s.
"The Ballad of El Goodo" is even better. Do you have any idea how many 80s and 90s guitar pop. Indeed, watching this guy try to be soulful on stage and rock out was pathetic; not because of his age, mind you, but because it wasn't natural. Than the sum of their influences? There are lots of bands that claim to be influenced by Big Star (REM and the. More like The Byrds or Rubber Soul-era Beatniks or something. No, because then they'd include shit pop albums that sell a lot. I like "When My Baby's Beside Me", "My Life is Right", and "Watch the Sunrise". And finally the closing acoustic "I'm in Love With a Girl" is kinda charming, but while some may dig how underdeveloped it is, it seems like another wasted opportunity to me, not to mention a bizarre way to end an album. But no, people were too busy listening to Tapestry, Four Way Street, and Jesus Christ Superstar to care. I actually think "O My Soul". Methinks not... Big Star weren't screaming "I'LL TRY AND I'LL TRY AND I'LL TRY" fifty thousand times, nor were they torturing you with one minute blasts of feedback sludge like "Recorder Grot" and "Internal K-Dart. " Ripped a line off "Thirteen" for "My My Hey Hey". Why are there so many songs that sound like "Pachelbel's Canon"?
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy basic 60s-style guitar-rock plenty, and I feel plenty of connection with the best of early Beatles, Stones, Byrds etc., but there's something I find weirdly sterile and off-putting about a lot of the music from the first two Big Star albums (I'm leaving Third/Sister Lovers out of this discussion because that album has its own issues). They're certainly not saying "The most expertly performed albums" or Joe Satriani and crap like that would make the lists. Nor were Renaissance, Peter Gabriel or Rod Stewart? And it's not that Big Star is a crappy band - far from it! Finishes off the album with a GREAT guitar melody! Favorites include Dony (reminds me of "Feel" off the first record), Take My Back On the Sun (Alex's homage/rip-off/answer to the Beach Boys), Whole New Thing (hilarious), Love Revolution (even more hilarious. Only one that gets the "cult legend" tag by rock critics. Here's the untold truth of "That '70s Song, " and the most optimistically-named band in history: Big Star. Till the End of the Day. Chorus to "Back of a Car" has the exact same melody as the chorus to. For example, Etsy prohibits members from using their accounts while in certain geographic locations. Let me know when you're off the Grind Gore Monkey Bars!
A list and description of 'luxury goods' can be found in Supplement No. Albums which to my ears are pieces of crap. Nothing different to say about this album than Prindle and 1000 other reviewers have already said. While my gut reaction towards the group has always been that they're nice but basically inessential (and this is a feeling that held for many years before writing this page), there's no escaping the fact that most people familiar with them have tended to put them on a very high pedestal, and so it's necessary for me to give this elevation the thorough examination it deserves. "That 70s Song" by Cheap Trick (Based on "In the Street") Chris Bell and Alex Chilton. Pretty much the only song worth coming back to repeatedly is "Lady Sweet, " a mellow/bittersweet power pop ballad that rivals anything the band did during the 70s (even the major highlights on the debut). Tragically, Bell was killed in a car accident shortly after the latter album's release; Chilton and Hummel both passed away in 2010. Oh, okay, that last bit was a josh on my part, but if you like Pavement, you should be really big on the Stars, especially this record. The drummer can drum, the singer can sing, the guitars have an AMAZINGLY sweet jangly tone to them, and they rock out like your average 70's rock band.
