The Offense of the Cross. There is something wrong when one does not. But to Jews, with the habits of feeling to which they had been trained in the school of Moses' Law, the cross was more than a sign of extremest ignominy - to them it was a sign also of extremest pollutedness. They live as though there is no hell. It demands from every man or woman as his first duty to get right with God. God's truth must and shall conquer; wherefore, then, dost thou, foolish creature, hope to oppose the gospel because it offends thee? Peter and the other apostles called the cross a "tree [xulon]" (Acts 5:30; 1 Peter 2:24).
God accepts nothing else but the sacrifice of Christ, and nothing else will avail. It is often displayed in lodge rooms, undertakers' parlors, and knife-and-fork clubs. But listen, if you are going to know about the love of God, you will have to look upon the cross of Christ. Young couples need to come. In that case the Cross has ceased to be a stumbling-block! Time elapsed and the mother-heart of this woman yearned to see the baby who was now a little girl of five or six. There is nothing good in us by nature. This is the message of salvation in a nutshell. First, you must repent of your sins and that word repent means to change, to change the direction of your life, to change your attitude, to change your mind, to let Christ dominate your life.

He does not come as a customer to the counter with something to offer God for so great salvation, but he comes as a beggar to the back door of heaven to receive something for nothing.
