This book is meant for adults but sixteen-year-olds and older can read it too with no problem. This doesn't mean she doesn't make mistakes though because she does. And that makes her entire story, and Monique's story as a biracial black woman aspiring to be a writer, even more poignant. Now at 79, Evelyn decides to tell her story and secrets to a lesser-known Vivant magazine reporter, Monique Grant. These two find their way to each other every time and it is beautiful. Of course, we hear all about Evelyn's seven husbands and the friends and enemies she makes along the way, too. She risks losing her job at Vivant and potentially wasting all of her time, as Hugo does not explain her true motives for this story until the novel's end. Themes that touched the deepest parts of my heart. One moment the reader can be reading about a scene set happily at a wedding, then the last paragraph before the chapter ends will give you whiplash as the tone shifts to something more depressive.
