This was my first book to read by this author but definitely won't be my last. They dip in and out of each others life's via email and reunite in person later on unfortunately because of a bomb explosion.
This is not a sweet, lighthearted book about star-crossed lovers, with frivolous characters. It wasn't as light as I thought it would be, but it was a really pleasant surprise for me to have some real depth to the characters lives beyond falling in love, having an argument and sleeping together. It overall I loved reading about their story and the many tragedies that made them into the adults they were. This had a very different feel to your usual love story tropes and covers some extremely heavy topics, so please be mindful of this before reading if you are affected by rape/terrorism references. I found it particularly interesting because my partner and I met and feel in love in college and it brought back my own memories from this time period. Reward: Lucky Fishing Hat. The writing was very well done which helped build suspense and successfully tie in heavy topics. At the beginning, this book felt like I was watching a late 90's movie, I don't even know how to explain the feel, but I absolutely adored it. The one that got away wow.com. This is a realistic kind of read. I felt invested in the lives of Clara and Benjamin in a way I haven't with a story for a good while.
Wonderful, captivating writing gives this novel the depth and ability to pull in any reader. Really highlighting that this novel isn't a romance. Does it cover some dark, triggering topics, yes. On the other hand, Benjamin has to work hard to create opportunities for himself-all while he faces pressure from his father to make something of himself.
