The characters in both series are well developed and the books are very atmospheric. However, as far as Veronica is concerned, she wants nothing to do with any of that, and has gone to great lengths to prove that very fact. In this installment, Stoker's former best friend is missing as well as an Egyptian artifact. One of the reasons I mentioned Elizabeth Peters above is that Veronica Speedwell is a true heir to Peters' beloved Amelia Peabody series, and I'd be shocked if Raybourn didn't count her as an influence. How do they escape the villain's coils? "I love this series!
