The road leading to the Charcoal Kilns is notoriously bad and high clearance vehicles are a MUST, if not 4wd. Lodging can be booked up to a year in advance, so get it sorted early. There is no schedule for when the jets will pass through (aside from being daily), so go with some patience and see what happens. I had some time before my flight was leaving over in Las Vegas so I made a quick stop at this spot on the playa. The hike through Marble Canyon is a great hot day time activity (so long as you're prepared) as there is typically ample shade and places to rest. Who knows what this poster means by "mud cracks? I've been there in January. The other cool thing I enjoyed shooting on the west side of the road were these cool green rocks. The mud cracks offer so many composition choices, shooting them is the easy part. You can see other photos from our trip here (each photo links out to different parts of the park). They can be just as photogenic. The aesthetic quality of mud tiles transforms with each season until another flood event creates new mud tiles. Scientists discovered a different force. Looking on Google Maps in satellite view you can see where the mud flows come down from the hillsides to the east and flow out into the flats whenever there are heavy rains. Once you get to the bridge the view back down the canyon is pretty cool giving one a great view of the valley in the distance. Just dress in layers for those chilly mornings, but be prepared to shed them as soon as the sun comes out!

Sorry, I dont have a picture of it but it works great. I'm hoping to get some good ideas from TOO. It gets in the way but is usable. Homemade shooting rail. I then cut the ends to the desired height and wrap it with black copper pipe insulation. They are not that expensive. Anybody here know of a good after market shooting rail for a lock on stand? My tip is a result of wanting to adjust the height of the shooting rail on my metal ladder stand after I moved it to a new location. The idea was to have something sturdy and quiet attached beneath each of the rail arms to raise the shooting bar to the height needed.
I was wanting to build something that resembles a shooting rail that i can staple camo burlap to conceal my movement better. A chain with turnbuckle is used to secure it to the tree. To grip the tree, I welded an angle iron with some teeth to the ends of the shooting rail. I've used this rail system for many years.
We were thinking about wrapping the stands with a camo type material from the shooting rail down to the platform. Has anyone built anything like this before? The PVC rings are the braces, and the clamps simply hold them in place. I took it off for the season. I used my imagination and came up with a simple homemade remedy using two square-shouldered U-bolt clamps and two PVC pipe couplings. Also bring black duct tape and a wrench to secure U-bolt clamps.
