October 30 - Decatur, GA - Eddie's Attic. Hopefully Two Ghosts which follows, is not the actual result of the lovers adventure as it tells of two people who no longer share that dream and who have lost the will to fight for each other 'I don't even ask where you're going' sings Tiffany in an arresting co-vocal, with Blake answering 'It's no place we haven't been before. This five-track EP follows the release of a debut album (2018) and a follow up EP (2019).
The second song, Hold On, mines similar territory and speaks of keeping your spirits high, even if the feeling is one of time ticking away. The list of contributors reads like a 'who's who' of Nashville's finest bluegrass players, with household names like Jerry Douglas (dobro, lap steel), Sam Bush (mandolin, fiddle) and Dennis Crouch (bass) all credited, together with Forrest Cashion (organ), Fred Eltringham (percussion) and backing vocalists Elizabeth Cook, Carlene Carter and Sarah Peasall McGuffey. For a Grammy-nominated artist headlining festivals, that's an eternity. The title track is a good example of why Fullbright is often compared to fellow Oklahoman, Leon Russell. Confession time first. A piano-led ballad it tells the tale of how the chord progression of the track itself is one in which the artist himself finds solace. The new album is his third studio LP and features 12 tracks of rootsy wisdom anchored by Fullbright's piano — think James McMurtry and Leon Russell hanging out at Cory Brannon's house — and propelled by his band. They are joined by producer Ken Coomer (drums), Scotty Huff (bass) and Sam Wilson (guitar, pedal steel). Fullright's capacity to display anguish, truthfulness and reliance all in one song comes into play in the prayer like title track, even if the sentiment is unlikely to be preached in any substance or alcohol abuse recovery programme ('God grant me whiskey and I promise I'll be good. Opener, Head In the Clouds is a pep talk to keep a positive attitude and to retain your sense of self, 'Keep your head in the clouds, Keep your feet on the ground. A little bit outlaw country, a little bit gritty Americana, it's a track that would sit well on any classic Mellencamp, Petty or Springsteen album. The songs were recorded at Cartoon Moon Studios in East Nashville and the sense of keeping a perspective on everything that was happening around Covid is never far from the surface. "Collectively, the band would go, 'What if it was like this, ' and that was cool. His tour schedule is also somewhat light on dates this season, at least by industry standards. There is an honesty and realism embedded in Hood's lyrics throughout, akin to a middle-aged man looking over his shoulder with some degree of regret, but with an inherent positivity going forward. "So much of it was recorded live. Fullbright himself finds his favorite album moment in the initially bluesy love ditty, "Safe to Say, " which begins with an understated birth but rises to culmination on the breath of a gospel choir style crescendo supporting an increasingly agonized confession of the heart's surrender to love. There is an intriguing sense of loneliness to the song and the harmonised vocals on the chorus are fantastic in their subtle, yet very effective execution. The essential truths are expressed crookedly within cleverly folded phrases, suggesting John's lyrical target may be to lie in order to tell the truth.
In three verses across three and a half minutes, the song's narrator looks up at the sky and seeks existential truths about God, love, dying and heaven. December 3 - La Grange, TX - The Bugle Boy. My Goldring only has three feet so it does not seem to be as stable. Other reasons to upgrade the cartridge might be to change the characteristics of the sound, improve tracking, or increase signal levels. The downside with MC cartridges are that they are much more expensive than MM cartridges and outputs a much lower voltage signal that requires a more sophisticated (and more expensive) phono preamp to function properly.
