I loved Victoria Hislop's The Island so when I received this sequel to review I was beyond excited! Spanish Civil War plus love story. Sonia's jaunt to Granada frames the main narrative: Miguel's long reminiscence of life in Spain shortly before and during the Civil War. The re-telling of the Spanish Civil War by Victoria Hislop in The Return made me want to read more history books about the period. But soon a chance encounter with Rosa, the daughter of their Jewish housekeeper, leaves Liesel in no doubt that something isn't right. After reading this I wonder how CAN the Catholic belief remain so prominent in Spain today?! The legacy is there, if you look for it.
