A LIFE HE RUINED WHEN HE CHEATED ON HER WITH SASHA. Her friendship between the kids in her friend group were so shallow. Finn was an overall great character in my opinion. It's something that I crave in a book. But of course he never does. IF HE HAD BEEN WITH ME is interesting because it opens up with how the book will end, so I thought I would be prepared with my feelings by the time I reached the ending (spoiler alert: was not prepared). The story's core centers around their interaction, the way they go from hot to cold, from barely speaking to standing up for one another as needed. Where do I even begin?
This story deals with mental health issues, depression and really has you questioning how I face you grew apart from friends. And I truly only kept reading to see how it would end. Finn was my overall favourite character. AND SHDALSDJASFF BYE go read it ugh. Who she'd cast in a movie adaptation of IF HE HAD BEEN WITH ME! If He Had Been With Me was a poignant story which I devoured in one sitting. Towards the middle, the romance began and Laura Nowlin began wanting to make us choose sides- Jamie or Finn. They rekindle their friendship and feel at ease with each other. The overarching love story between Autumn, Jamie and Finn had me turning every page because I wasn't sure who I was rooting for.
When Finn said that, wow. This is their story. He's a perfect example of real people out there- they lie and leave you brokenhearted when they're the people you need the most. Finny himself is now one of my most favourite YA boys, not just as a gorgeous love interest, but for who he was. As I write this review, I think, the story felt unfair. A story with a dramatic beginning. This book could have been epic... The plot was almost nonexistent! The other characters were meh. I just have no idea. I'm going to put this out there so everyone can see before they make a decision to read this book: If you dislike crying or would not like to cry or bawl your senses out, please don't buy this book and I'd seriously run away from it and this review. Although I did call him immediately after I finished to blab about the book for a good thirty minutes. They grew up together and are best friends, but high school is hard and things change. I was a snotty, teary mess. Throughout their whole childhood, Finn and Autumn were inseparable—they finished each other's sentences, they knew just what to say when the other person was hurting. I'm just so over that now and crying doesn't even come close to what I want to do. But, alas, the premise doesn't live up to the book. But you see, Autumn is such an unreliable narrator, even though she says Finn and her are no longer friends, you can read between the lines: that they have sexual tension, and Autumn is an idiot. The plot unfolds in a seamless way. It's incredibly hard to talk without spoilers. So, is the reader supposed to believe that Autumn and Finny were just Meant To Be and Perfect For Each Other? Anyway, I can promise you that this book will stay with you for the rest of your life.
This is going to be a really negative review. I was fully invested in the outcome of this book, and the events hit me hard. I really have all positive things to say about this book EXCEPT for the ending. It takes you through the 4 years of high school Autumn goes through with her group of misfits. He was adorable and all that but nothing really new. If I was smart, I would've predicted it ahead of time. If I had felt anything.
Way too much Jamie and not enough Finny. Now in high school, Autumn is a part of a gang who are different from other students. More deeper than Tumblr deep, everyone. The main idea of this book is basically finding out what would happen if Phineas was with Autumn the whole entire time. What I cannot like is how the story seemed so stagnant. Readers know when they've stumbled upon a book that will crush them when they won't ever be able to read it for the first time again. Human nature is to question, pull back, and hold on to quiet insecurities. This has been a roller coaster of emotions for me, I mean, literally.
