The relative lack of nicotine means it can be smoked all day if the tastebuds are upto the task. Can be very wet out of the tin/8oz bag and requires some drying. I believe that Penzance will one day be for me as it is with many of the conniseurs of the pipe.
An evening is not complete without a bowlful of Penzance. That unique taste is what drives the fuss for this blend. In the tin, it was a weaker smell. I happened to find this blend at a shop I frequent a few times a year (they are good for supplying hard to find blends). Smoking boys lightweight champ. It smells right, looks right and starts well. It does take a little bit of effort to light as it is somewhat moist, and I usually have to do one or two relights while I'm smoking the bowl, but all and all, it's worth it. First I was quickly hit with the scent, something I will never forget.
Upon rubbing, it appears that the "slices" are more of a crumble cake than a virginia-style slice, in that the fully rubbed-out form is more of a cube cut than ribbon cut. Even then, a minimum effort was required to produce a clean, even burn to termination. I found a tin of this that was ignored and dusty at the bottom of a rack at a tobacconist I visited out of town. I cannot give more than 2 stars because of i'm not a latakia addicted.. Penzance is possibly the most addictive substance known to latakia smokers, and well worth every penny. It's always worth a try though, sometimes if you look hard you can find things you want. It is a wonderful complex secret recipe of the finest Virginia, choice Turkish, Orientals and Cyprian Latakia. The finest tobacco I have smoked to date. I'm sitting on a pound of it I've been aging for at least 4 years. Smoking boyz - light wait champ ii. However, it does have a bit of a bite, not much, and the bjarne seems to be a cooler smoke than my other briars. Is there any other pipe tobacco anywhere in the world that tastes exactly like Penzance? I don't know what Cepecol(sp) tastes like, and I haven't tasted anything but the best tobaccos in this blend.
Decent tobacco flavor, the Latakia is noticable, however it doesn't really make a strong presence. Considering it is extremely hard to get it with regular price and just have a smooth taste like this as its' feature. Upon opening the small rectangular tin I noticed the short flakes were quite soft and delicate; the tin aroma is earthy and pungent, woodsy. Burns well, with few relights. Pipe Used: Peterson XL23. Smoking boyz - light wait champ x. This all suggests to me that this stuff is chemically enhanced to an unacceptable degree. The presentation of the tobacco is second to none.
I guess I'm still learning the ins and outs of pipe smoking. After all these, I'd recommend to smoke it dry (as dry as you can) with filter and packed medium (not loose nor tight). I am reminded of the Dunhill brand Aperitif. If I was a lover of this blend, I would personally try a misting of "Betadine" on some "Pirate Kake" and see if I didn't have a new cheap way of obtaining Penzance!!!. Absolutely no work involved, and we all like that;) Lights up to a delicious BAM! Tin and was extremely excited when it came in the mail. If it isn't for you, you may want to save your time/money. With that being said, I packed it into a 1947 Parker billiard. As I smoked it, however, like most good English, it developed, and HOW it developed. I have been smoking the Devils Chimney for about 10 years, English Blends exclusively for the past two years and Penzance is by far one of the best tobacco to ever grace my pipes.
Maybe a little drying out will help. Room Note: Wife actually said she didnt think it was an overpowering room note, which means anyone else may not mind it. This mixture reminds me of the Sobranie blend that came in the black and gold package. Upon lighting I was greeted with a very mellow smoky taste, very pleasant. Without doubt the BEST English flake out there. Smoke slowly, too, as this will nip the tongue. All in all one of the best pipe tobaccos out there!!! I think that when you leave it half open on the ground it would make a fine ant-exterminator.
That day, over the course of three hours in the park I had two bowls of Penzance spaced apart by an hour or so and in two different pipes and concluded the following: First bowl was in a medium size GBD Billiard that has always been my dedicated English tobacco pipe. The tobacco that you enjoy extra long no matter what you eat and how well you brush your teeth. No doubt this a quality, well made, crumble cake (flake), however the latakia proportion of this mixture overwhelms any other tobacco presence to be discovered for most of the bowl. I had to kick a door when I was 5. A richness that could almost be tasted.
Penzance is outstandingly rich, complex, and satisfying. In the same vein, I really couldn't tell you what it is that makes Penzance blend so special. I pack it loosely, seems to stay lit a bit easier. As you smoke the pipe down though, you get into an oriental nirvana that I haven't quite found in any other blend I've tried. We Have NOW Tried ALL Three Packs ~N~ It's ALL Very BAD Tobacco. I find it really does not need to be rubbed out at all, since it is not too hard pressed.
Everything was to like about this tobacco. Actin' like they the ones created this and they get all the drip from my guys. Also, I must add that in reference to Penzance, G. Germain/Esoterica Tobaccos has demoted itself to irrelevance and insignificance by keeping a stranglehold on the the market for its products and not keep production level with demand. I can think of several blends I would reach for before this but it is absolutely worthy of a four star rating. Update, 23 September 2011: Over the past year this has become my number one. Rubs out easily, packs neatly and lights well. 1000 and Old Ironsides.
Over all, it remains restrained and smooth and creamy. Exceptionally smooth oriental and latakia blend with those two weeds being the main players. Matured Latakia, which is darker, slightly less sweet and peaty. I've seen someone talking about a process of fermentation which would give this blend it's "spark" and I believe it to be true. It's beyond the comprehension of human mind. There are over 150 reviews here already, so I'll try to avoid retreading ground that's already been well covered by others; although, I will say that the observation that it smells like band-aids in the tin was especially apt. I suspect this is aged for years before it reaches retailers. If you can find it, try it, but please do not over pay. Aroma was typical Latakia/ English with maybe a hint of earthiness.
Penzance was my first experience with cake. S wet and tastes dirty. I cannot understand yet why people say it is perfumed - unless, by perfume they mean the smell of cow crap and hay after a light rain? Packs perfectly and burns cool. Every time I get around to a bowl of this I keep thinking I should have went with a more fulfilling smoke. Like all Germain tobaccos, Penzance is named after an English town. As heretical as this might sound I do not think Penzance is the best Estoterica blend. Mad that it wasn't living up to its hype in my head. It crumbles great, burns cool and even, and leaves an incredibly white and pure ash. Then lightly fill your pipe with just a slight amount of tamping, but not too much! I was taken through sweet pineapples, and sour woody spice. I will finish this tin because I do enjoy the latakia and the smoke is smooth, but I will not be ordering more. Even so, when I opened the cardboard, I could smell the latakia with the tin sealed and wrapped in plastic wrap.
Oriental and Virginia flavors take up supporting parts, but it's the Cyprian leaf that demands your attention. Changed complexity as went though the stages of the bowl - but all were pleasant to me. For such a dense, moist flake it managed reasonable burning qualities. This is a quality tobacco, but not for my taste.
I am having a hard time deciding which is their best offering. This has become my favorite tobacco overall.
