Well, I love to make a difference, and really I don't manage my own money. I do find that if I'm going to read a book, it tends to be less about fixed income. I find mfs like you really interesting piece. We brought it to our board, it's really good to hear the voice of your major investors that this is, you know, we've had it on the agenda. Nicole Zatlyn: I am a huge fan of the work of the Santa Fe Institute. And it's such a clear example of, again, like you said, a company that's been committed and doing that and now reaping the reward of maintaining an edge over an extended period of time.
When you're going to invest over seven, eight, nine, 10 plus years, you're really looking at places where, again, people are, they want to stay, they want to get involved, they want to work really hard and be productive, and really contribute to an outstanding opportunity that they see in front of them. So, I think that would be really valuable. And the most standard answer I see or hear or read is you just need to own companies with pricing power, which sounds relatively simple, but as fundamental equity managers, pricing power is something we try and identify in companies irrespective of the scenario, which we find ourselves. Even the conviction around having difficult conversations around board structures, governance, around social aspects and stakeholder interests. I think we can all think of examples right now, not going to name any names, but within the banking industry where there's kind of questionable governance there in arguably being managed in, I think, potentially reckless ways so as that they can continue to meet quarterly expectations of earnings reports. Sector Spotlight: Pricing Power. And sometimes actually, management or issuer teams, because sometimes the discussions are with sovereigns. I find mfs like you really interesting girl. So maybe as well as outside experts and people like us taking different approaches, maybe it would be helpful to have of asset owners, consultants, NGOs, others across the value chain, even companies on talking about the different approaches that they're taking. Something like 12, 000 individual raw materials they handle, so the degree of complexity that they're handling on behalf of their customers is very, very high and something that not everyone can replicate. I can't claim that my passion when I was young was to be a portfolio manager in fixed income, but nevertheless what did get me here was just adapting to different settings and different changes. And kind of that, you know, the learning, the talking, the doing the deep dives, the reading, there are just no shortcuts to this. Sometimes you think that something is very specific to an asset class, but then you find out that again, that there are common elements across the different teams that can be shared. And there's so many different ways in which you're finding pricing power and businesses that maybe most of us aren't thinking about, but the one that sort of everyone does, I guess, think about, and the one area you do cover is luxury goods. I mean, I think we're all on a journey, right? Lots of lessons learned from that experience, going through the bankruptcy while still being an investor and obviously managing the team. So, that's all absolutely important. What does a high-quality plan entail for you?
Ever since then, we've been engaging very closely with them around some of those issues. So, when you think about governance for a company, you're thinking about the management team, the board. How do you think about that sort of aspect of the companies that you're... David Falco: In periods of persistent inflation, it's often overlooked, but really a company needs to inflate cash flows and not just the income statement profit, because future CapEx is likely going to cost a lot more to maintain the existing asset base. I think Cass Sunstein wrote a book called Wiser. Again, you can't really rest on your laurels. So in the US, there's Glassdoor. When you look at some of these businesses, where have you seen that competed away or where have you seen companies lose pricing power? But also recognizing that on the E side of things, we were making significant strides and we're going to be a leader in electrification of vehicles. Are there any examples that spring to mind for you over the last year or so, where you feel you've been able to draw from either the platform, or from your experience of working across multiple sectors or asset classes or regions that's helped you analyze the risk or opportunity slightly differently? And those are the core that you always grab as a safety blanket, as you jump into the ever-changing world. Have grit and have passion. It's an opportunity, too. As a leader, I think a lot of it is ensuring that there's that diversity of thought, there's that freedom of expression of your views and conviction levels on your pieces, but there's that true sense of the value that provides to other teams by sharing that knowledge in forums that allow you to express yourself freely.
I think a lot of the time we learn from those like us. So we do have so much more technology, and it's ubiquitous globally. Another major theme for me was what Barnaby brought up, and he phrased it as "excessive short-termism. " I think a lot of our job is really to ask the right questions. Again, it's sort of, to my eye anyway, going largely mainstream now. Ross Cartwright: Hello, and thank you for joining us today. And on the flip side, I wonder, especially given you're looking for those companies that are solving environmental issues and problems, and they can be, I'm sure you know, fascinating and sort of groundbreaking in many respects, and businesses going through transformation. Nicole Zatlyn: Then you should be grateful for that. Anything that you, again, reflect on and take out of that experience that helps you today as you reflect on team building and the culture, and what you are aspiring to achieve here and now? And it requires the participation of everyone on the team working collaboratively and working with a lot of different groups globally.
