First published March 13, 1952 THE KILLER INSIDE ME classic is an unsettling, but notable work of crime-noir-horror that I must rate 5 Stars. It's not a long book, I finished it in just a few hours. Originally published in the 1950s this story has aged remarkably well (and contained way more gory details than I was expecting for its age). She ain't running it into the ground, and she ain't takin' on no roustabouts or sheepherders. So, what should have been a bleak, gritty crime thriller ends up being a sort of whimsical psychological drama that takes itself seriously, but in the silliest of ways. I got this killer up inside of my favorite. But again, I'd like to stress that there isn't a lot of it in here. It has a nice pace and Winterbottom's direction is extremely clever. His every act is carefully considered & ruthlessly executed. I think its genre is "Crime Fiction" but again, that was fifty years ago. They called these crimes sexual killing, and sexual killing is almost always indicative of a male murderer. A small town deputy sheriff hovers between two lives, his simple life as a deputy and the other part of him that comes out. So, perhaps whatever happened between Lou and his father's housekeeper, bent Lou a little crooked in his interactions with women in his adult years. Both authentically portray their respective eras in their use of language, social conditions & cultural attitudes & prejudices.
