Pointe shoe elastic tends to be wider and more heavy-duty than technique shoe elastic. Take the shoe off and place the ribbon back inside of the shoe. If you are doing a double elastic, grab both ribbon and elastic. This way, once the ribbons are tied, the elastic won't be as visible. Then, draw a line on the angle of the fold using a pencil. Do this to all the other ribbons. Place the back edge of the ribbon along the fold (on the inside of the shoe) and pin in place ( if you are using the ribbon with an elastic portion in it make sure the correct side is facing out). The knot should be invisible: if it makes a bulge when you tuck it in, trim the ribbons. Cut to the desired length. It is where you pull the needle up and down through the fabric. Students should never dance in their pointe shoes with out ribbons. Step 6: STEP SIX: Sew Ribbons. Be sure to sew through the canvas, but not through to the satin on the other side of the shoe. Add approximately 1 ½" of extra elastic to place in the shoe for sewing. Thread a strong needle with reinforced thread that matches the outer satin layer.
Getting your first pair of pointe shoes is an exciting milestone in many dancers' careers. Also, as pointe dancers gain more experience, they often alter the placement of ribbons and elastics slightly according to preference. Because no two feet are the same, it is best for each dancer to sew her shoe in accordance with the shape of her own foot. This will provide a guideline which you will use to angle and sew your ribbons. Pointe Shoe Ribbons. Many girls have all kinds of elastic contraptions to hold the heel of the shoe on. Sewing the ribbons and elastic yourself by hand, compared to with a sewing machine, is also much less likely to damage the shoe.
Line up the ribbon with the mark you put on the inside of the shoe. This prevents the ribbon from fraying on the inside of the shoe. Pointe shoes should only be purchased after a student's instructor has invited them to begin their training en pointe. Be aware that sewing the elastic to the heels may give you blisters. Measure a length that is comfortable for you. A lighter or some clear nail polish. The Sewing Procedure. Make sure you pin the elastic in place on one side first (or sew if you prefer) and cross it over the ankle to determine the length of elastic needed. For a stronger hold, fold the end of the ribbon so you are sewing through a double thickness. Ribbon is sold in one long piece of approximately 2. You will sew a square to bring your stitches to meet with where you started.
Make a box around the elastic. Since feet sweat up to a half pint of water during an hour class, if is imperative that the shoes be allowed to dry completely. Dancers should also be sure to mark the placement of their ribbons for each foot, because each foot may be different! Steps for Sewing Elastics. Once a dancer has been properly fitted in pointe shoes, the next step is to prepare them for wear.
Be careful when singeing the ends of the ribbons. Note where the side edges of the ribbon are touching the liner. The elastic should be placed about 1/2 to 1 inch from the seam in the back. About a half inch of the elastic should be attached on each side, stitches should be about an eighth of an inch long. Be sure to get properly fitted & don't be afraid to speak up during your fitting. This will ensure that you have enough for the next step.
