Tony Fucile has created an adorable Bink, who looks as though she doesn't have a care in the world and a more intense Gollie, who just exudes urbanity. I quite enjoyed the clever illustrations and how they depicted the world of Bink and Gollie. Children will have fun filling in all the spaces this high-spirited, quirky, and warmhearted offering leaves to the imagination" (Booklist: Gillian Engberg). Like Frog and Toad, each chapter is complete in itself; that is, the action at the beginning of the chapter is resolved at the end of the chapter. "'The finger has spoken, ' said Gollie. ") Gollie, in contrast, is seen all akimbo legs, phone gripped in one hand, and a second holding a book, clawlike above her head.
They are simple, yet show so much emotion on the faces of the characters through excellent details. Enjoyable little episodes in a close friendship all tied together with a bright rainbow sock. Every Child Ready Curriculum. More cottage than house, really. Written by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee, illustrated by multi-talented animator and author, Tony Fucile, the first in what will hopefully be a series, is out in paperback just in time for the release of Bink & Gollie: Two for One. Starsky and Hutch, step aside. Whether exploring the wonders of the state fair, attempting to set a world record, or just relaxing with some pancakes and peanut butter, Bink and Gollie are irresistibly witty, imaginative, and adventurous — just the sort of friends young readers love.
The book is 96 pages and the first graders had problems staying with it. Item is on backorder and will ship when available. Get sample pages and prices. Beat in egg, then milk. And don't think to yourself that these tales take place while the grown-ups are away, either. It really is the best thing ever. These two friends are very different with big vocabularies. Bink is short, blond, and sports a permanently pleated skirt. Section source used to find the material: ALSC: (Theodor Seuss) Geisel Awards (2011 Award Winner). The universe Bink and Gollie occupy could only exist in children's literature. And speaking of Fucile's brilliance.... Open the book. Gollie also says things like, "Here I am, where none but a few have ventured. Recommended with caution for beginning readers.
Gollie lives in a super-modern build atop an enormous tree. With just the tiniest strokes of his pen, Fucile turns a potentially tragic scene into a heroic one and then immediately into one of great poignancy. Ditto pages 13, 14, 24, 57, and 69. One of the things I find most intriguing about Bink and Gollie is that they seem to live alone and I can't really gage how old they're supposed to be. Annotation: All righty, then! Was he asked to make Bink's scarf at the end of the book the second bright sock purchased at the beginning of the book? The book has three simple stories, but each one sparkles. For young readers, 80+ pages, even with all those pictures, might be long, so it's nice that the text is so easily broken. Much of the drawing is in black and white, while the girls and their immediate task are in color.
Summary: Bink & Gollie are true opposites and best friends. BEST FRIENDS FOREVER. These books are very necessary for primary grade students as they move out of picture books into more complicated texts. They don't always like what the other does, but their friendship remains.
Whack a Duck, You're Special, Aren't You and Without Question make up the three stories in this new book. Kate DiCamillo: you're my new hero. So much of the book's charm comes from Fucile's artwork. I especially enjoyed Carol Rasco's review for the way she focused on Tony Fucile's artwork. Science of Reading Foundational Support. 81 pages, Hardcover. Vocabulary activities for all three stories. I apparently can't say anything cohesive about this book right now. As with Bink & Gollie, DiCamillo and McGhee bring their story back around to the sweet, wonderful friendship that exists between these two characters. There's a website for the book as well.
I could almost hear Bink's cute little voice in my head (she has some of the best lines). Was he told that Bink was a creature of peanut butter and to add that element in when appropriate while Gollie belonged squarely on the pancake side of things? Very cute books, a hybrid between easy reader, chapter book, and graphic novel. This book has reached the levels of love in our home as any Mo Willems book and DiCamillo's Mercy Watson books. In the second selection, Gollie embarks on a voyage of the imagination, exploring the Andes Mountains (all whilst in her own home), while an impatient Bink can't quite grasp that her friend doesn't wish to be interrupted. In the first story, Bink finds a very brightly colored pair of socks which Gollie thinks are outrageous. And true to his background as an animator for Pixar and Disney, Fucile makes his inklike digital illustrations crackle with energy and sly humor. Perhaps I will come back and write some more lucid thoughts later.
