Maybe bc I read it tho. After five years in New York City, Greg and Steph return to their hometown for their 20th high school reunion and to a dramatic encounter with Kent and Carly, the friends they left behind. In 2000 he wrote an off-Broadway play entitled Bash: Latter-Day Plays, a set of three short plays (Iphigenia in orem, A gaggle of saints, and Medea redux) depicting essentially good Latter-day Saints doing disturbing and violent things. Our playwright develops four characters in his story; Greg, Steph, Carly, and Kent. In Reasons to Be Pretty, Greg's tight-knit social circle is thrown into turmoil when his offhand remarks about a female coworker's pretty face and his own girlfriend Steph's lack thereof get back to Steph.
I found one of the key conflicts in this play to be the characters inability to adequately communicate, to fully articulate what was meant. Neil LaBute's bristling new comic drama puts the final ferocious cap on a trilogy of plays that began with The Shape of Things and Fat Pig. Please copy and paste this embed script to where you want to embed. The change in setting also shows a passage of time in the play. Humanities › Literature "Reasons to Be Pretty" Act One Synopsis of Neil LaBute's Comedy Share Flipboard Email Print 'Reasons To Be Pretty' presented at the Stella Adler Theater. Kent is obviously aware of his striking good looks, and his self-important perspective bleeds into everything about him; condescending in that "I'm prettier than everyone" way reminiscent of stereotypically jerky jocks or entitled frat boys, Pavinato's Kent, though beautiful to behold, is in truth the most unattractive of this bunch. Liked it, different and some good monologues... love to hear a male perspective - and this was different. Not about beauty, something that is so fundamental to being a woman, so un-understandable if you haven't lived through it. I loved the premise and the main message of the book, but I just couldn't bring myself to empathise with any of the characters because they all seemed so boring. He's got a good face, really, not knockout but very OK, yet I never used to even think it to myself, I mean, envision him in that way. My biggest issue is that I didn't care enough about Greg, our protagonist. One day Greg and Kent are chatting about another good-looking co-worker when Greg offhandedly compares Steph to the good-looking co-worker and calls her "regular" looking.
This script follows a familiar LaBute narrative but doesn't quite captivate me like some of his other work. Act One of Reasons to Be Pretty concludes with Greg's realization that his relationship is not the only one that has fallen apart. He's just so good-natured and humorous. After a heated argument, Greg explains he and his friend Kent had a conversation in Kent's garage. Scene Three Steph meets Greg in neutral territory: a restaurant at lunchtime. Various situations, word choices, and even stage directions give me the unsettling feeling that the women in this play are seen through a lens of intense disregard, while the men are complex and active in the story. And, although it is possible that this is an intentional choice in the writing intended to point out some larger societal problem, I think that's kind of a stretch. It just is... (Beat. ) No but I'm actually seething you don't understand honestly i don't understand why I'm so mad.
Though the play's two couples + relationship conflict = drama formula is a tried and true one, Reasons to Be Pretty excels by having the aforementioned awesome (and often brutal) dialogue and by hosting a cast of blue collar characters. Script Extract #1STEPHGREGSTEPHGREG. And the relationships were heartbreaking. I want to see this play acted out now because WOWZA it's just such a good play to read and it would be easy for the audience to follow. Lo que a Steph le molesta es que su novio la considere apenas "regular"; él insiste en que la belleza física no le importa mucho, que lo importante es la segunda parte de la frase. I guess that could be part of the message the playwright was trying to convey, by making the characters seem as real and normal as possible, but I wasn't a fan of this portrayal. 152 pages, Paperback.
That about sums it all up…". In this one conversation, Chumbley earns a sympathy for her Carly that overshadows all of the foulness previously on display. A bit outdated to the modern generation however despite not being that old. Sometimes, a friend or, like, some cousin of mine visited a few months back and she whispered to me at a family thing we were at, a barbecue, "God, he's cute. Kent reluctantly confides in Greg, admitting that he is having an affair with the "hot girl" at work. Personal preference aside this play does a good job tackling what it's like to try and fit into a beauty standard and what happens when you lose that confidence. He cheats on his wife with someone more physically attractive and justifies himself shamelessly. So it's like a trickle up theory with him. My second criticism is somewhat related: there are four monologues in the play, one for each character.
Please help us to share our service with your friends. In the Company of Men portrays two misogynist businessmen (one played by Eckhart) cruelly plotting to romance and emotionally destroy a deaf woman. Greg finally fights back (verbally) and says that he doesn't want to see her "stupid face" anymore. We are a non-profit group that run this website to share documents. He goes through a long list of positive details about her physique. She is the one who gossiped to Steph about Greg's conversation, regarding her "regular face. "
Expecting that his family believes that he was killed in the towers' collapse, he contemplates using the tragedy to run away and start a new life with his lover. However, she says that his comment about her face represents his true beliefs, and can therefore never be forgotten or taken back. Not that, but even on the fence... How can I? Actually yes i do in this WHOLE PLAY there's not ONE scene with just two women. There's something touching about a character struggling to describe the color of a woman's eyes, and coming up with the color of a crayon from ".. one of those bigger cartons, like, sixty-four colors, with the sharpener in it. Anyway, I was casting about for a play about beauty, and this one, that was nominated for and won Tony awards, is. I'm watching the Bad News Bears all of a sudden?
With the sun going down — you know how it shoots a ray out sometimes around something, like a halo, almost — it was doing that and he was bathed in this light for a second, in this splash of gold and creamy light, and I thought, "Yeah, he is.
