So this tells the story of the only two black students (Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo) who are in their final year of high school in Niveus Academy. Now, if you don't speak publishing like I do, you may be wondering what some of these words mean. The book touches on it in a way suitable for a YA novel. Instead, the two main characters were the victims of horrific racism. Outside of name dropping a few designers this felt very generic private school. I know things like Senior Prefects are a popularity contest. This was compared to Gossip Girl but it never get me those vibes. However, Chiamaka's and Devon's lives start getting tangled in each other when they respectively get nominated as Head Prefect (for the third year in a row) and Senior Prefect (to everyone's surprise) respectively. Let me start this off by saying, never in my life has a book ever moved me or affected me the way this one has. The plot was extremely slow paced, there were many aspects of the book which I found were unnecessary and dull. I never expected this book to have it's constant twist and turns like bella being related to the girl that they hit with the car, and even the car accident being staged, that's insane. I don't have a keyboard at home, because there's no space and they are a lot more expensive than they look. All you need to know is... There's a lot of ugliness, violence in modern day America.
There was a lot of telling in this story and I would've liked to see more showing. I love an elite school setting and I especially loved how Iyimide was able to weave important topics like racism, classism, and homophobia into it. Like none of their friends outside of school would hurt or mock them. The plot does not notably improve the odd characterization. The exploration into the rotten core of institutionalised racism provides the perfect, insidious backdrop to this high stakes thriller. Although Faridah doesn't explore this depiction in detail, it's clear that wealth acts as a shield to certain problems. She's popular, she's powerful, she's smart and she knows what she wants and what she has to do to get there.
The combination of the haunting story and formidable characters make this book absolutely stunning. I really enjoyed reading her chapters. Even though they have the same skin colour, they couldn't be anymore different. And she is polyglot, I can only Stan. Both parents are physicians and are never around. In fact, what makes this book so intense is that it's all too real. So this is to tell everyone that you're right. Okay so I had really high expectations for this book, considering all the hype and positive feedback from numerous readers, but alarmingly this book disappointed me:/ I found myself reading the same sentence over and over again because I was extremely bored (if you plan on reading this book before going to bed then trust me when I say this, you should not! However, the theme of this book was powerful and influential. If you're worried about this being the same sort of book you've read a dozen times, there's no need. The story picks up immediately and doesn't let up until the last sentence of the book, all while slowly ratcheting up the tension. Àbíké-Íyímídé explained that it was a story born of her own worries while at university. It is constantly described as a combination of Gossip Girl and Get Out, having never seen either of those, I relied on the back of the book and the inside flap to see if it was something I would like to read and suggest my young teenage daughter, (and followers to read). And the added social commentary especially those parts that focus on racism, classicism, white privilege, and more take this book to another level. One thing I also loved is how social media is used as a platform for information and activism.
