This tobacco hardly needs another review. The only drawback to this tobacco is perhaps that it is a little wet, and smokes a little hot as a result. This special aging process is probably done in the open air with lots of humidity or dampness to keep the tobacco moist while allowing bacteria and other organisms to thrive and do their decaying thing. I've tried for years to get a sample, and at last succeeded, thanks to a friend from the USA. A very enjoyable characteristic emerges about midway through the smoke that is probably due to the interplay between the sweet Virginias and the slightly bitter Oriental tobaccos. Rather, it is a solid tobacco that should be an everyday smoke for those who love it. Smoking boyz - light wait champ 5. If packed and smoked slowly and carefully, Penzance has a wonderful and subtle complexity of sweet Virginias and orientals that weave in and out with the deep background of the latakia. I actually dumped out half a pipeful from one of my favorite meerschaums, a 43-year old dublin which has experience with all kinds of tobaccos, but it couldn't give me any pleasure from Penzance. Certainly, there is an art to loading even krumble kake, but really just about anything will do with this tobacco, is is very tolerant of lazy pipe loading.
79 and a bag ± $ 28. If you're going to cellar this blend, I'd recommend buying it in larger quantities and breaking it down into two ounce portions stored in little mason jars. The aroma from the pouch is very rich and smoky, and I find it very pleasant. This tobacco has a strong top note of latakia, a nonexistant bottom note and nary a middle note.
Now though, it seems a bit heavy handed. Again, "Margate is to the morning, what Penzance is to the twilight, the evening, and the black and dark night. " All in all one of the best pipe tobaccos out there!!! This was a wonderful fuller taste and smoke. In conclusion: A good to almost very good blend, but it's definitely not the greatest of english or balkan blends.
The other is Special Latakia Flake with which I find that it shares the Virginia flavor but while Special Latakia is indeed Oriental (Turkish) forward – this one in my mind is the true Oriental blend- Penzance is more about the Latakia. I'll let you know when I'm actually able to smoke it as a flake. I find it to be awfully monotone. This is the only tobacco I can think of that I've finished a bowl, and immediately refilled and smoked a second - it's that good. This made me curious about Penzance. If you have it around long enough to dry out, it still never becomes harsh as with some blends.
I bought a tin of Penzance ten years ago at the Tinder Box and my recollection of it is a very good, full-bodied tobacco, though I didn't find it any more remarkable than anything else I was smoking at the time. I thought 4 stars with so many people judging it was a bit much... but it wasn't. I was pleasantly surprised when I happened upon this blend at a tobacconist, since a tin of Penzance is about as common as a solar eclipse these days due to huge demand, astronomical hype and hoarding. I still have yet to have it "bite" even with the moisture. We was very, very excited. Great for celebrating those special events in life! I never found it a "hot" smoke which my tongue appreciates very much. A tangy, heart shaped herbal leaf my wife adds to her spring rolls (I don't know what it is, but she calls it hootenany and it does very well in the garden). Opening my tin I definitely noticed the almost smokey.. beef jerky smell.. not in a bad, store-bought kind of way, but the kind of smokey goodness you'd find at your local farm, or out up in the mountains to the west.
It was a "nice", medium "English", very good, but not the "Penzance" I craved, and it is not the fabled stuff I wrote about, above. It comes in crumble-cake, which is an annoyance if you carry / travel your pipes, but is really the right packaging for this style of tobacco. Perhaps this fact will one day fuel "Penzance parties", where tins are shared rather than hoarded in jars... Update, 08-14-2022: About 3 weeks ago I remembered I had stashed a couple of sealed tins of Penzance, and I thought to check on them, Both tins seemed to remain sealed, but the older one, from 2009, was lightly corroded, so I popped it.
