A History of Violence is raw and compelling. The scene that brings the sex-violence nexus to the boiling point takes place about an hour into this tightly wound 98-minute film, shortly after the revelation that Tom Stall, the central character played by Viggo Mortensen, used to be Joey Cusack, a big-city gangster who once ripped another man's eye out with barbed wire. Shore, who also scored the Lord of the Rings films, appeared as a Rohirrim soldier in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). I'm usually a very forgiving movie goer, but this one literally had me shaking my head several I'm a big fan of Viggo Mortensen & Ed Harris, but I thought this movie stunk big-time. The names of "William Orser" and "LeLand Jones" are a play on the name of the character actor Leland Orser.
I like the acting in this which is something that grabbed your attention. The movie ends A History of Violence has it's plus points (a good story, some cool over-the-top murder action and some kinky sex) but they're offset by some ham-fisted scripting, flat direction and too many sub-plots that don't come together. The director`s video diary of the screening of the movie at Cannes Film Festival and the interviews etc. In spite of its brute force, this is a nuanced movie, with scenes of extreme violence juxtaposed with I am generally appalled by the gratuitous violence of so many films these days, yet still I found myself drawn to the flawed protagonist. This could again be deliberate, possibly to give you an idea of how holding on to a huge secret can drive a wedge between a family.
NOT long after the release of "A History of Violence, " a news report began making the e-mail rounds. I was a big believer in the metacritic system before this. Best movie of the year. Too bad that style doesn't play to this type of movie as it does to the excellent (and disturbing) Dead Ringers. Viggo does an alright job of speaking quietly and then bursting into violence but nothing really is noteworthy about it. That really helps to explain the one-dimensional characters, the contrived plot, and misogyny. He's a great character who knows what he's doing and living his normal life. How could they almost unanimously support such a horrible movie? A boy shoots a man through the stomach with a shotgun resulting with a gaping bloody hole. So not a Hollywood production, this is a @#$! Perhaps not for everyone but I loved it.
A History of Violence is an underrated gem, one that was mildly successful thanks to the built in fan base due to the source material (it's based on the graphic novel of the same name), but it definitely deserved more attention at the time of its release. It was like leave it to beaver. The violence in this movie is quite graphic yet frightening; two men rob a diner and forces the man to give them money or his partner will forcefully try to rape one of his waitresses. Based on the evidence of his eyes, the man who calls himself Tom Stall is actually Joey Cusack, an ex-killer from Philadelphia. This movie presents the issues of running from your past, the ongoing consequences of violent actions and a persons struggle for redemption. Harris is always fun to watch and I loved Mortensen as the lead.
From the first 5 minutes i realized that the movie was slow, and i was kinda hoping for it to be like a cool directorial thingy, but it's not, it kept going like this making the movie painful to watch. Bullies often target a specific kid and then invent reasons to attack them, and not all families have as open a dialogue between members as others. A History Of Violence works on so many levels with such convincing acting and a riveting story. A beautiful wife, two children and a stress-free existence living in small-town America. May not be everyone's cup of tea, because it's talks about our relationship to violence and how it reflects who we are as a society. Cronenberg plays the audience like a fiddle for an hour and a half, taking our desensitization against violence on film and throwing it in our faces so that we can no longer look away. And it's okay, we can be reflective and critical and still be 's only a movie. I was continuously waiting for the next development to find exactly what was going on. I saw a deleted scene which is known as "Scene 44" for some bizarre reason which features a dream sequence in the diner, where Fogarty tells Tom he will kill him and his family which leads him to kill him with a shotgun and then he shoots back. And it's on TV that Carl Fogaty (Ed Harris) sees a familiar face. Neither the script nor Viggo Mortensen gives us a clue whether Tom and Joey are the same person, or whether Tom is the victim of an unfortunate coincidence.
