We love My Father's World because it is very hands on and heavily literature based. Any thoughtful insights, experiences, warnings, or specific praises are appreciated and will be published. All of the books I needed came with it, so when I couldn't get to the library for a month, the children didn't suffer, and when I could get to the library there are extra books they can read in the book basket about what we are doing, but it wasn't required so the children flipped through them when they were intrested and left them when it they weren't intrested.

My Father's World does update their material but works hard to make sure you can still use their materials by sending you new schedules and making sure student sheets correspond. It also means I do not like strict rules and inflexible structure, so I need freedom to be flexible.

My Father's is also less expensive than many others because it's a one classroom style, meaning you only have to buy one curriculum for your whole family (depending on age of course), so your cost will be much lower. More conversations on comparing: HTH, Julie. We can easily have discussions on these topics and field trips and family adventures are that much more meaningful because I can schedule them to correspond with what they're learning. So I got out my kids' notebooks, and sure enough, we have done a few!
But as a whole, I really love Sonlight. Then, you hear other people chime in saying things like I used such and such and never got it all done anyway. I like that with MFW I can get most everything done even with 6 children of varying ages. And 2 younger children under my feet including the special needs stuff. There is plenty of reading as with SL in the form of parent-led readings (Bible, history, and science), book basket, student reading practice, and read alouds. As children get older, there are 7th and 8th grade supplements that help you match your child's needs.
I know the importance of reading aloud to children and I personally remember historical fiction books from my childhood. That being said, I used Core A with my then 7 year old and he really liked it. So far, I've just pulled from here and there for our curriculum and haven't really found anything yet that I'm really excited about! Save it or share it! Science is too random. I like the idea that MFW leaves more room to supplement if you want to, and that I wouldn't be weeding out material b/c there is too much to go through, but I just wanted to hear from anyone who's had a chance to use both and what you thought! It's done for you in MFW! The hands on learning and DVD of MUS are great for my visual and kinesthetic learners. So, could you ladies fill me in? Different programs advertise "deep" in different ways.

I like sonlight but haven't ever used a whole curriculum from the, straight through as planned, I tend to combine stuff from a variety of places in hopes of creating the "perfect" plan (ha)! You can view a list of all of their samples, manuals, etc. So there's the "newbie" point of view and the "veteran" point of view and that plays a lot into how the amount is perceived. They are simplified so that they are doable - in other words, you get stuff that's been practiced by other families to get it right.
I loved the choice of books in that program. I am an ENFP homeschooling mom, which means I need structure or I get distracted very easily. Either way, I'm here to help. From one relative newbie to a veteran. From a homeschool parent that has used both: Our first year we used Abeka and it was like pulling teeth for my 6yo son to sit and do worksheets. They know more about the Bible than I did until I was an adult.
I don't remember that in FIAR. For example, in MFW1 I would read a Bible story, then my ds would read the Bible story from the Bible reader, narrate it to me, summarize it in his Bible notebook, draw a picture of the story, and put the time-line figure on the time-line. Life is fun and always interesting! Hands-on with MFW-1 were things like making a shepherd's bag (easy enough even for me and I don't sew), baking Hamantashen cookies. We supplement with math and some social studies. Bible integration is very important to us. It's a literature based program, and there's a TON of reading, and it's heavy stuff. In order to provide some other side of the debate insights. When I did fiar, I had my fiar book (which I liked), another book for Bible study, another book for math, another program for phonics/spelling/writing. Such a great easy year. While this is awesome, it is also very expensive, and doesn't give you flexibility in the books you read. It requires 'doing'; whereas SL required cuddling on the coach a good portion of the time. However, from the samples online I don't get the sense that the actual geography study incorporates much reading aloud together time--it appears to consist mainly of completing worksheets. I love the way it is laid out. I lloked at the Sonlight atalog to see if I want to switch back and no, I don't think I do.
