All of the characters were vivid and complex, but I do wish that some of them, particularly Lily's mom and Asher's best friend, were more fleshed out. The second storyline centers around Lily, her backstory (which is heartbreaking), the months leading up to her murder, and Asher's murder trial. And that's what I mean about it being twice as much work, because honestly, when I read the book now, it is hard for me to remember what phrase was mine and what phrase was Jenny's. It's a hard one to talk about without giving too much away, but if you like stories that tackle complicated subjects with tenderness and thought, books that keep you turning the pages, and characters that will stick with you, I recommend picking this up (yes, even if you're not a huge Picoult fan). I found Mad Honey to be sensitive and engaging with fully developed characters I cared for, rooted for, and worried about. Jodi mainly wrote Olivia's perspective while Jennifer captures Lily's. If you are up for a novel that will challenge your ideals, confront any hidden prejudices you may have, and change your perspective, Mad Honey is a must read. The story takes a hard turn when Lily is discovered dead, and Asher is seen as the prime suspect. A parent never wants to believe their child would harm anyone. I loved the courtroom drama and all the shocks that were revealed during the testimonies. Afterwards, Lily admits that her own father abused her. As if, for so many people, it isn't the very thing that most puts you at risk in this cruel and heartless world. In what ways are they similar? There's so many themes to pick up on: identity, acceptance, the cost of lies. Lily feels rejected and deeply upset. It is a must read that left me forever changed. Therefore, I was excited to learn that Mad Honey was coming out and that she had co-written it with Jennifer Finney Boylan. It is one of the best books I have ever read, and that is not an exaggeration. While Jodi's novels all involve very intense storylines and challenge the reader's beliefs and viewpoints, there was just something about this book that was even more special – and it has a lot to do with the addition if Jennifer Finney Boylan's perspective.
It's unclear why Boylan and Picoult chose to approach those sections of the book this way, especially considering Olivia's story is told chronologically. It transforms into a mysterious, deep, haunting story because, at its core, this novel is about identity, abuse, self-acceptance, intolerance, toxic relationships, and trust. But now they're co-parenting a daughter, Emerson, who's almost a year old. After a question about why Lily's autopsy didn't mention her female reproductive organs, the coroner drops a bombshell: Lily was a trans woman. I will not spoil the plot for anyone but I would like to thank the authors for writing a book to make people pause and consider what they think they know to be true in hopes of opening their minds to new beliefs and values. And I love the idea that something sweet can be incredibly dangerous. She works for the Forest Service. Readers get a three-dimensional, heartfelt look into the heart and mind of a young person dealing with gender identity. Overall, it's a fruitful collaboration. The story unfolds from Olivia and Lily's viewpoints (Lily's before the murder), and centers on the budding relationship between Asher and Lily and the subsequent court case against Asher, who is represented by Olivia's older brother, Jordan, a high-profile defense attorney who has appeared in previous Picoult novels. Unfortunately, due to the hype around this book I already knew about one of the major "surprises" that was revealed a little way into the book, and for the sake of my review I do need to address it. This story was no different. Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. And yet the book is a seamless whole. And does Olivia really believe in love?
