This is a brilliantly eerie novel that at times chills you to the bone. I really enjoyed The Chalk Man and personally I think The Taking Of Annie Thorne is even better. The Taking of Annie Thorne is a wonderfully chilling tale of a village haunted by its horrible past. Now years later, Joe finds himself back in his hometown and what happened to Annie could possibly be happening again. I received a free copy of this book. 🙂 During The Taking of Annie Thorne there are moments when you will find yourself 'reading with one eye open, gripping your book tight. It doesn't take long for Joe to realise that Hurst is still the bully he has always been, and that his tenure at the academy is likely to be short-lived. The secrets will come out shocks will be made old battles will come back to haunt all those involved is Joe going to find out the truth to what happened to his Sister and Chris is what he thinks happened really true or is there a much darker truth going to come out that is going to be more shocking and devastating? Have I been too gushing in my praise for a favourite author?
I absolutely loved this, it's so different to what I usually read. Genre: Thriller/Mystery. Fast forward 25 years, in debt, desperate and lured by a mysterious email echoing the past, Joe has come back to the village where he grew up. In 1992, as a teenager, Joe wasn't one of the popular or cool kids. That mysterious text you received? "With shades of Pet Sematary and an all-round aura of creepiness, The Taking of Annie Thorne cements C. Tudor's position as a major new talent at the dark heart of crime writing. He was bullied at school and in fact eventually joined the gang of bullies himself. CJ Tudor's follow-up to her impressive debut is superbly chilling and delightfully creepy. This is now followed by another stand alone novel, The Taking of Annie Thorne, which builds on the atmosphere of what came more and, in my opinion, the result is even more successful. I loved this book, another fantastic read by the author.
The slow build-up, culminating in those vivid scares and bursts of violence, demonstrates the cinematic potential for The Taking of Annie Thorne. There is a creeping dread on every page'' Daily Mail. As the days went by, Joe became aware that something was just not right with Annie. Because when my sister was eight years old, she disappeared. But of course, the whole plot and story is rather original and more complex (if compared to The Chalk Man). But she wasn''t the same afterwards. Her absence went unexplained and Annie, herself couldn't remember where she had been.
Clever horror/thriller with a touch of the supernatural. I almost deleted it straight away, but then I clicked OPEN: I know what happened to your sister. Send NetGalley books directly to your Kindle or Kindle app. Initially set in modern day Nottinghamshire, as the story progresses you start to get parts of the 90s back story of when the protagonist's sister, Annie, went missing when she was 8 and he was 15. However, I read this book a lot quicker than I had been managing other books of similar length. The characters in The Taking of Annie Thorne were I think part of the problem. But Joe also has something of a history with the small town of Arnhill: this is where he grew up; Arnhill Academy – the school where he now teaches English, following the gruesome death of the previous English teacher and her young son – is where he studied, and where he spent his formative years in the company of his friends, amongst them Stephen Hurst who is now on the local council, as well as being chairman of Arnhill Academy's board of directors. It reminded me a little of Pet Sematary and the idea that death is not something to be tampered with. Penguin UK - Michael Joseph, Penguin. An old mining town full of folk who don't take kindly to strangers, run down pubs and miner's welfare's and of course the looming shadow of the abandoned pit. As an anonymous message to Joe states is the past repeating itself? It's happening again... How this book made me feel: What a book!!!
The book kept me wanting to turn the pages to find out what happened next. It rolls on and on regardless, eroding out memories, chipping away at those great big boulders of misery until there's nothing left but sharp little fragments, still painful but small enough to bear. Many of the characters from Joe's past are equally disagreeable and are great baddies who make for satisfying foils. Has all you would want from a good read!! But even the rules of reality can't be relied upon. Five friends: Joe, Stephen Hurst, Marie Gibson, Nick Fletcher and Chris Manning. C. Tudor has it big time - The Taking of Annie Thorne is terrific in every way' Lee Child 'It's not the dead you need to be scared of, love. Oh my goodness - this is a creepy one! Now, putting something off limits is often like a red rag to a bull so although the mine has been constantly a no go zone you just know that the young people of the area flock to it like moths to a flame. Most people being too squeamish to want to live there it has remained unsurprisingly empty. Joe is followed by a trail of bad debts and a desperation to get himself out of trouble. And then, miraculously, after forty-eight hours, she came back.
Joe Thorne has returned to the Nottinghamshire village of Arnhill years after he left it. I'm not sure that the new direction was the right one, because it left a lot to be desired and there were a lot of unanswered questions when it got to the end. It's difficult to pick up a sophomore novel with anything other than trepidation when the author's debut was so good. Have I been too harsh? My only issue with The Taking of Annie Thorne is that it feels a bit too derivative of one of King's books, which actually weakens the story. In 1992 Joe Thornes 8 year old little sister Annie goes missing from her bed, only to reappear 48 hours later, refusing to say what happened, she is so terribly different to the child she was before.
It (and I am not the first person to say this about the author) had undertones of Stephen King type tension and terror but also, for me, a little Harlon Coben wisecracking and dark humour. 99 (GBP)/ Hardback £6. The Taking Of Annie Thorne by C J Tudor, read by Richard Armitage. Finally, I have the "OH I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING! " The old gang are still here, well, some of them. It's difficult not to talk about C. Tudor's work without mentioning the obvious influence that Stephen King has on her work. This tells the story of troubled teacher Joe returning to his home town to face past demons... A real page turner of a book, perfect for thriller fans, this will keep you guessing until the end. 'Wonderfully creepy - like a cold blade on the back of your neck' Lee Child. Each part to this leaves you wanting more, but the interwoven modern day tale is equally gripping, and I found I couldn't put this book down and read late into the night to finish it. Admittedly the first part of this book is a much more gentle pace than I am used to but from reading The Chalk Man, I had confidence that once it was all set up, it would speed up a bit towards the end. The book was so creepy in places and you never knew what was coming next. THE TAKING OF ANNIE THORNE.
Apart from a bit of scene setting at the outset the novel is told in the first person from Joe Thorne's point of view. They were the five who were there that night. The story is told from Joe's perspective. There's a theme of bullying in The Taking of Annie Thorne and Tudor doesn't shy away from or sugarcoat the harshness of the subject and the effect that it has on those involved. But he is not welcome there. The story slowly unfolds through a series of flashbacks, slowly revealing all we need to know to understand why Joe has returned. He has a very appealing cynical take on life which draws the reader in and holds the attention but the real hook is his reason for being in Arnhill.
Joe is a bit of a colourful character. Years ago, Joe's little sister Annie went missing. She has her own style and she is comfortable with it. A tragic event in Arnhill leaves a vacancy at the local school. When Joe Thorne receives an email with the words "I know what happened to your sister. And here's the thing, this book is all about the building of the suspense and the creation of a spine-chilling atmosphere, forcing you, the reader, to your own conclusions. A little slow in places but LOVED the ending x. I really thought the narration was good, they've got a really good voice.
And is already one of my favourite novels of 2019. I was frustrated by the lead character, Joe, whilst simultaneously hoping agains hope that he'd get the upper hand and that all would become clear (it does). The novel is billed as horror so there are the requisite creepy moments with beetles and Annie Thorne's behaviour, told in flashback to 1992, at relevant points but, to me, the real horror lay in the Lord of the Flies attitude permeating the local school. A place he swore he'd never return to, but here he is, taking up a teaching place at the run down academy. He also doesn't help his cause by sticking his nose into things that certain people want to keep hidden.
There are plenty of unsavoury characters that Joe has to contend with, many hiding secrets and having agendas of their own, and C. J Tudor's wonderfully descriptive writing bings them to life. Paperback | English. This is a creepy and atmospheric mystery tale that had this reader simply wanting to know what was ultimately behind the strange goings on. Daily Express – 'Reminiscent of the master of horror Stephen King'. This is a dark tale, narrated skillfully by an undoubtedly gifted storyteller that will, from the unexpected and rather bloody prologue, worm it's sneaky little fingernails under your skin until it has a firm hold. When she came back, she wasn't the same Annie that disappeared. After 48 hours she returned but she wasn't the same. When I first started reading this book, I wasn't expecting that this story would remind me of Pet Sematary. Wham bars - nice touch. Tudor's debut novel, The Chalk Man, is also still available. Thorny (Annie's brother) is a character you are unable to decide if you like him or not and also whether you want him to navigate his path through the story or not.
